  1. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 10:26 AM) So, why would we want to just weaken our bullpen ... now ... of all times? It probably is a precursor to abother deal. That's something I can definitely see happening. That would be almost a certainty. One of the current bullpen guys would have to be moved if another guy was brought in. Most people [myself included] thought it would Vizcaino. Yet Viz has come on strong, has better "stuff", and can face more batters each time out. If Shingo is out, I'd to see another LHP brought in
  2. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 09:50 AM) After Quentin and Jackson, here are the D-Backs next 3 top prospects FWIW, splits and John Sickels pieces as shown; Zeringue - .260/.301/.356, 52 K's, 13 BB's Santos - .241/.301/.420, 67 K's, 26 BB's Kroeger - .274/.332/.458, 65 K's, 24 BB's My guess is that if it's going to be anyone of those 3, it'll be Mr. Santos, since if the Sox decide to keep the prospect, they'll want an infielder over an outfielder. A very good SS prospect nearly ready for the bigs has to have some value. If it was AZ that's interested in Shingo, Santos would be a very good value for him. AZ has a few SS's in their system. They could keep him or move him in a deal for a SS like Vizquel, Cesar Izturis [as the dodgers need to rebuild for 2006]
  3. QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 06:16 PM) On ESPN News today Jason Stark said FLorida will be more than willing to trade AJ Burnett to the White Sox for Contreras and Marte. Otherwise, he may go to the Mets!! Why do I think of Brad Penny and the LA Dodgers when I think of doing this trade?!
  4. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) I'm with ya on this Dick. Been preaching it for the past few days. I want Vizquel badly and it makes so much sense considering how it moves Uribe to a super platoon position. He'll get plenty of Ab's playing 3rd twice a week, SS once a week and 2nd once a week or so. It will also keep Crede, Vizquel, and Iguchi fresh and at the same time if Crede goes down you can plug in Uribe as the starter. the only question is how do you get vizquel w/o giving up Uribe? A straight up trade leaves the sox in the same position, w/ ozuna at 3B? W/o getting a SS, SF won't give up Vizquel.
  5. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 05:03 PM) Juan Uribe....trade for Omar Vizuqel and then you would have the best utility guy in baseball in Juan. I'd be very happy with a bench guy like Uribe, as long as a SS like Vizquel could be had.
  6. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 04:15 PM) Cintron is a fit, Ryan Freel is the best fit. Freel adds speed, a great OBP, and can play multiple positions, including a serviceable 3B. Meaning, he can big time help in other areas should Crede remain healthy. Best case scenario is Crede rests a little with a very serviceable guy is brought in. So the sox keep his great glove and have someone else who plays a solid 3b and hopefully a different look batting wise [like a LH bat, some good OBP skills, contact hitter, etc] I have no doubt an upgrade over Ozuna will be found. With both uribe and Joe question marks [joe health wise and Juan stick wise], someone who can play both would be best.
  7. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) If Crede's hurt, we need an everyday 3B, not a utility guy. If it's just 2 herniated discs, then rest should cure it. Crede could take some time off and still be ready come playoff time
  8. Pablo Ozuna is a decent UTL guy. But with Joe Crede having 2 herniated discs in his back, someone who could possibly take over 3b on a semi-regular basis [say a 3 week stretch that Joe could rest his back], who would be a definite upgrade over Ozuna would be needed for the sox in the playoffs. If Joe's back keeps him out for the playoffs, I want someone who could take over at 3B. If Joe's back is OK, the UTL would have to pay elsewhere as well. He should be a good glove, handle the bat well [bunt, move runners over] and either have a good avg or high OBP; also play multiple positions. Thoughts on who? The usual suspects--Mackowiak, Cintron? Others? No big names here. Just plausible UTL guys.
  9. It said the Twins are willing to offer top prospects for Joe Randa. Now he'd be a decent pickup for them. Not enough for them to overtake the sox. But enough to help contend for the wildcard
  10. Here's the link to Nightengale's article. A lot of tidbits to sort through that could affect the sox http://www.usatoday.com/sports/bbw/columni...14-majors_x.htm
  11. • The Blue Jays, who thought they might be in the dumping mode, can't give up yet. They are 44-44 and 5½ games out of first place in the AL East. They are listening to offers for starter Ted Lilly and closer Miguel Batista, as well as center fielder Vernon Wells and second baseman Orlando Hudson. But they say Hillenbrand is not yet available. ------------------------------------------- If they are listening to offers for Lilly, then the GM's like Riccardi and Beane are being a little deceptive -Imagine that
  12. From USA today's bob nightengale: "The Braves have expressed strong interest in Blue Jays starter Ted Lilly. ... " With their track record [maybe not Danny Kolb], any player the Braves are interested in should pique the sox interest.
  13. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 02:01 PM) The Twins havent been this far back in a long time. Desperate times call for desperate measures (cough Bret Boone cough) good point. The Boone move was pretty desperate. but him being a FA next yr, and not costing them much talent [maybe some money, I don't even know the specifics of the deal but wasn't that big] was a small move.
  14. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 11:00 AM) The A's will end up winning the WC and it's the run that they're on now(that'll last past the deadline) that'll get them there. Beane has no reason to sell off Zito right now and as we're seeing his actually going into buying mode instead. The A's could easily lose 6,7 straight and they'd be in a deep hole for the wild card. Their next 10 or so games are vs TEx and LAA, which should decide if they are sellers or not. As far as winning the WC, they'll have a tough time beating out Minn, Texas and either Bos. or NY. Next year they'll be really tough, though.
  15. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 01:57 PM) Now that bothers me alot. If there is any team out there that could probably trump us all with prospects, its the Twins. Except the Twins hardly ever do deals that either 1] take on money or 2] give up top prospects
  16. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 11:00 AM) For fans of a team with Buehrle as its ace and also in the same town as Kerry Wood I'm dumbfounded by this love affair with Burnett around here. Flat out, the guy doesn't win no matter what his "stuff" is and one would think that Buehrle fans would recognize that. Burnett's 3 Hr's allowed last night looked eerily reminiscent of another ex-Sox acquisition--Billy Koch. Straight fastballs down the middle, and then over the fence. Granted that is some of my only looks at Burnett. Yet however fast he threw, that FB looked very hittable
  17. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) I'm on the same boat as Cheat, I don't think we need to trade for a big time starter. I would have loved Day, if the price was right, perfect groundball pitcher at our park, but I can't see the Rockies giving him up. Of course the issue with Burnett is always going to be, how much do you give up for him, and can you re-sign him to a long - term deal. Do you even want to give him $10M a season with Mark Buerhle the team's ace making less? Is there room on that boat for me?! If the sox get a SP, it has to be a guy who fits in this yr and for the future. Burnett doesn't, as he'll get a big offer for 4+ yrs in the offseason from someone. With his injury history, sounds too risky for the sox to invest long term. Schmidt seems like a reach as well [though if healthy, a good year and two month rental]. Zito seems like a sox guy though [good production, healthy, takes the ball every time out, affordable for 2006]. Though if the sox can get either El Duque or Jose to get on track to be able to go in a game 4 for the playoffs, the cost for a SP probably wouldn't be worth it. [as it would take away trade chips to fill other holes] Getting Billy Wagner, a UTL guy who can play 3b in case Crede's injury becomes serious, and a 5th starter type, ala Day who could be in AAA in case a SP goes down, might equal the talent necessary to get a guy like schmidt or Burnett. Right now teams are asking for the moon for SP's, which will keep contending teams from filling all the holes they have.
  18. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 07:00 AM) You're kidding right? Beware of the guy that has good outings against your team. Seattle gave Boston Derek Lowe on a deal where they acquired a guy that did well against them and he was so bad I can't remember what his name was now. Zito did well 2x against us, but aside from that, what has he done in the past year and a half? Nothing of very much merit. Zito has been back to his old form the last 2 months, and not just vs the sox. Add in Zito's postseason experience, success vs possible playoff opponents, and he'd be a nice option for the sox.
  19. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 08:56 PM) THe Marlins beat-writer was just on 670WSCR and confirmed that 12 teams are after Burnett, but the 3 major teams interester are Baltamore, Toronto and the White Sox. He said the Marlins have been interested in Contreras for over 2 years now- and see him as there potential closer. He also said the Marlins want to dump Mike Lowell's contract so would most likely have to be involved with this trade. So this trade would most likely be: Contreras, Marte and Crede for Burnett and Lowell. WOW- thats Blockbuster. If FLA liked Contreras, they'd still get the SP they wanted for this yr, maybe move him as closer next yr. The key to me is that FLA wants to dump Lowell's contract. Except the sox wouldn't take it on, mostly because it would displace crede. More likely, FLA could find a team to take on another contract to swap with another underachieving guy. Of any team to trade contreras to, the Marlins would be a good fit for Jose due to its proximity to Cuba. the key is whether FLA would want him.
  20. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 08:56 PM) Beane has stated repeatedly that Zito goes nowhere during the season. Either he means it or the price for Zito will be outrageous. I forget where I read it [maybe from Bob Nightengale of Sports Weekly] he said Beane was listening to offers for Zito despite his public stance. If the price were similar for Zito as it would be for Burnett, I'd rather have Zito: Cheaper next yr, not the injury concerns, better acquainted with the AL.
  21. FWIW, the A's have a tough schedule before the trade deadline, esp. the next 10 or so vs. Texas and LAA. Then they play the AL Central into early Aug. Here's hoping the A's tank quickly so Zito is on the block
  22. It certainly makes sense for teams like Oak. and Col. to spin off guys like Byrnes, Payton, Kennedy, Witasik etc for younger, better talent to possible playoff teams willing to overpay
  23. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 12:01 AM) I would center a deal for Burnett around either Cotts or Marte. Doesn't matter to me. It would be a high price for a guy like Burnett. Far more than we probably expect or could speculate
  24. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) At this point, I might be more prepared to trade Marte than Cotts. When was the last time we could trully trust Marte when he came in? I think he's one of those players who carries more name than talent. He was dominant a few years ago, became known, and has yet to revive his form. I'd be more inclined to trade Marte as well. His numbers seem real deceiving. Yet from all accounts, a FLA scout was in CHi for the A's series. No Marte
  25. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 12:49 PM) Cotts stays. If they want viz they can have him. The interesting name you mentioned is Jenks. As much as I love Jenks arm, for a guy like Burnett he'd be expendable. Beck, that really is a great point with Jenks, I could honestly see Bobby being the center piece of a deal for Burnett. Obviously they'd want more then Bobby but that could definitely be a start. I like Cotts too. Yet if you were FLA wouldn't you want him when you only have 1 LHP? Jenks would be a nice guy for a non contending team that's rebuilding
