QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 06:11 PM) If, by some grace of God, the Sox can center a deal for Burnett around Brandon McCarthy and Damaso Marte, then sign a lefty the likes of Embree or someone else off the scrap heap, would you make the move? If the sox could deal for a LOGGY, like Scott Eyre or Ron Villone to replace Marte, sure. Prospects could probably be used to acquire this type of guy. But the Sox keeping Burnett?! That's where I jump off. The sox should move him for other pieces

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 06:15 PM) I think Damaso is a dominant left hander who would be sorely missed in any run for the playoffs. I'd much rather lose Cotts before Damaso. When he's on he's virtually unhittable. Damaso was unhittable one game this yr. And 2, 3 yrs ago. Last yr and most of this yr he hasn't been the same pitcher. Cotts is young, cheap and has more upside than Marte.

QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) ESPN Insider's Buster Olney is reporting that the Fish are now approaching the Sox about A.J. Burnett, and would be asking for Brandon McCarthy in return. The trade could be expanded with Damaso Marte going to the Fish and the Fish including another player. I think another ESPN writer [stark?] wrote that Philly would trade Wagner for AJ Burnett. If the sox did that, maybe. I don't think Burnett pitching every 5th day, being the 4th best SP on the team [maybe 5th], throwing maybe every 4th playoff game, won't take the sox past the first round. A guy like Wagner would though

Last night's game
All teams go through tough stretches. If this stretch is as bad as it gets, the sox [and us fans] should consider themselves damn lucky. Only a few tweaks are needed to take this team deep in the playoffs
-
Eddie Guardado
Sounds like the sox will do their best to go after Wagner. He's healthy, has lights out stuff from the left side, and has playoff experience. Guardado is just too risky with his rotator cuff

Rafael Furcal on the block?
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:47 PM) .258/.317/.395 is not worth $5.6 million. Just two weeks ago his OBP was below .300 :puke He has turned it around as of late. And he also had some huge playoff numbers last yr.

Rafael Furcal on the block?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) I was just teasing, beck. I'm sure you could dig up a lot of dumb stuff/predictions that I said/made in the offseason... No big deal

Rafael Furcal on the block?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 03:15 AM) Beck... what about -- uh -- Christian Guzman? Yeah, he's a bust. But that's what scouting is for. People who can gauge his intangibles, like heart, desire to win etc. Looks like he got his big contract and went back to sleep [like many ball players before him]

Rafael Furcal on the block?
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 01:59 AM) I agree, there would be no better player to turn around this lineup. Unfortunately, for what the Braves are asking, he won't be dealt to the White Sox. What is ATL asking for?

Rafael Furcal on the block?
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 01:35 AM) Question is, why do the Braves deal him? They are in a tight race out east. Either Furcal's shoulder is a big problem, or Betermit is that good. I don't know. Either way, Furcal would make this team even more explosive, and give us better option off of the bench. Uribe then becomes a backup at 2B, SS, and 3B, and we aquire what would become the best 9-hitter in baseball. I don't know what we would have to give up, but I'm sure Raffy wouldn't be cheap. Furcal's a FA after this yr. The way Betemit has played, maybe they'd be willing to give Furcal up. ATL sure needs some bullpen help Usually, when ATL's name comes up in trade rumors, something happens. Schuerholtz usually gets something done, and doesn't try to "hold up" other teams in a deal

Rafael Furcal on the block?
I read this last week that Furcal could be moved when Chipper Jones got back. Now this is circulating around elsewhere http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review...s/s_355235.html He'd be a nice addition. Esp. with his bat getting hot, his high SB total, his defense. He'd cost a lot in terms of talent. Yet with little pitching help available, the sox could use prospects to get another solid, versatile offensive player to help for the playoffs. He'd be a FA at the end of the yr. They may not re-sign him, and still have uribe the everyday SS for 2006. Yet the sox could offer Furcal arb. [only making $5.6 mill this yr], let him go elsewhere for $9 mill a yr for 4 yrs, and still get 2 high picks. I'd like Vizquel. But with no talk on that front, why not Furcal?

Jason Schmidt News
QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:16 PM) If they trade for AJ, I want a window to resign him or no deal, I don't want him coming here with no longterm deal. We had the Ozzie factor for FG, for AJ it's going to be 4 at 40 If I were the sox i wouldn't trade for AJ in the first place. He'll be on the DL for 2 of the next 4 yrs at least

Rafael Furcal anyone? Seems he's on the block. If the sox can't upgrade their pitching, getting another bat like his couldn't hurt. http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review...s/s_355235.html

Jason Schmidt News
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 07:45 PM) I just read over my Sports Weekly and it states that "The White Sox are willing to give up pitching prospect Brandon McCarthy in a trade for the Marlins' A.J. Burnett, but they won't surrender him in a deal for Giants starter Jason Schmidt. The White Sox will move Triple-A outfielder Brian Anderson for Jason Schmidt." Here's how I read that: Bmac would be expendable because the sox would try to sign AJ to a long term deal. If the sox got Schmidt, then it might only be for the next few months, maybe 1 yr. Then Bmac would be ready

Jason Schmidt News
With Larry Monroe still looking at Schmidt, he could be added. In the Tribune today, it said the sox may be leaning toward adding a SP and moving a SP [el Duque or Contreras] to the "middle" of the sox bullpen. Sox improve their SP and the bullpen with the one addition [as long as Contreras isn't traded for Schmidt]

White Sox Trade Thread
from today's Tribune. Looks more likely a SP could be acquired rather than a reliever. hasn't the talk been KW wanted to move Contreras to the pen? --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Of the closers who might be available, the Sox are thought to have little interest in Seattle's Eddie Guardado and Pittsburgh's Jose Mesa, believe Philadelphia will keep Billy Wagner and Houston won't deal Brad Lidge. Toronto's Miguel Batista, who has a contract for nearly $5 million next season, is somewhat intriguing. Williams said he "has been actively staring at the major-league board [of available players] for a month." Indications are he might rather acquire one more starting pitcher and move someone from the rotation into a middle role in the bullpen."

Adkins coming?
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) If they bring up Adkins instead of Baj, that tells me one of two things. 1. The Sox do not think Baj is the real deal. 2. They think that Adkins ability to pitch more innings will be more useful. Adkins would be the long man in the 'pen, moving Viz to the set up. It's basically who do the sox want as the set up man--Viz or Baj. Adkins would see mop up duty

White Sox Trade Thread
QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:07 PM) Interesting that right after KW says he's gonna sit on the sidelines trades start busting out all over. Maybe he was the wildcard out there and now that he's out everyone is playing their hand. The teams far out of it have outrageous demands for a while now. The price will come down a bit when things start shaking themselves out, and there are less trading partners. Or those teams get nervous [due to impending FA's, big salaries to unload, etc] and have to settle for less than their original asking price Most teams have talked, know each others' asking prices. With 12 days left, there is still plenty of time to get a few final pieces

We Need Billy Wagner
If Philly does think they have a chance at the playoffs [which being 5 games out they realistically do] they'd at least want one or two guys who could help them this yr, with Urbina moving to closer. Bobby Jenks would probably be a big key to a deal with them. With Guardado's bad arm, and Hermanson's sore back, that would be very tempting, even for a two month rental. Now if The phillies lose 5 in row, their thinking may change

We Need Billy Wagner
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) It looks like the Red Sox have backed off Wagner according to ESPN, and have picked up interest in Shingo. Could we maybe package Shingo, and Top level prospects for Arroyo and then turn him around into Wagner? The red sox would trade prospects for Shingo, that's all. I posted a link that listed what Philly may want from trading their guys [not just for wagner but in general]: pitching, 3b and C. The sox have pitching, Josh Fields [3b] and Chris Stewart [C]. With David Bell and Lieberthal around for another yr or two, if they're looking for guys ready after next yr, those two aren't bad [a 1st rd pick and a AA all-star]

Our Feelings On A Trade
Most teams are waiting to see where they are in the standings by the deadline. Teams like Oak, Phi, Hou, are still trying to contend for the wildcard. Realistically, these teams don't have a chance but aren't ready to sell off their players. One losing streak will turn a few teams into sellers that we aren't talking about now.

We Need Billy Wagner
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) It just depends if KW wants to give up some uber prospects for Wagner, or say trade Shingo and a mid - level one for Latroy Hawkins, Ron Villone or Scott Eyre. It depends on Dustin's back and if the sox thinl it could be more serious down the road. If the sox don't get a SP [which they probably won't--weaver, Burnett etc aren't that big of an upgrade over Jose and Orlando] the sox would have enough talent to land Wagner as their only big acquisition. With Guardado's arm a big risk, few other closers are out there. IMO, a healthy Wagner would be worth the propsects given up.

White Sox Trade Thread
3B Josh Fields as a big piece to get Billy Wagner? C Chris Stewart? With Crede likely staying, same with AJ, why not? --------------------------------------------------------------- here's the link: http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/102...005-515785.html Teams show interest in Padilla, Wagner By RANDY MILLER phillyBurbs.com PHILADELPHIA - Just in case the Phillies hold a fire sale before the July 31 trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have been scouting closer Billy Wagner for a week and the Texas Rangers began monitoring pitcher Vicente Padilla on Sunday. Word is the Phillies have been eager to deal Padilla, but general manager Ed Wade could change his mind now that the right-hander has followed a string of bad starts with two gems. Padilla worked seven shutout innings in an 8-4 Phillies victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday to stretch his scoreless-inning streak to 13. As for Wagner, it's believed the Red Sox have made at least three calls to the Phillies without luck in initiating trade talks. Meantime, a major-league scout predicted on Sunday that the Phillies will be hard-pressed to find a taker for first baseman Jim Thome, who reportedly is available. The scout said Thome's recent run of injuries and lack of production this season are a concern even if the Phillies would agree to eat some of the $43.5 million the first baseman is owed beyond 2005. The feeling also is Thome would drop his no-trade clause only for a few teams, perhaps the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians. None of those teams are in the market for an expensive first baseman/designated hitter. What would the Phillies be after if they start dealing? Pitchers, a young catcher and a young third baseman, sources say.

My Rules for a Trade
QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:20 AM) Burnett would be a much better acquisition than a bullpen arm, and provided we don't actually have to give up Contreras in that deal, he can always move to the bullpen in the post-season. Unless the sox signed Burnett to a Freddy garcia deal [Not a good move w/ his injury history] it's not worth the cost in terms of talent [esp as it would keep the sox from making other moves]. Burnett will probably get a 4 yr deal from some team [and he'll be hurt for probably 2 yrs of that contract]. Jaret Wright comes to mind

My Rules for a Trade
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 01:54 AM) But considering what it would cost to get that top tier starter, this really isn't that much and it will truly strengthen the club. A strong bullpen will be a major asset down the strecth and an even bigger asset in the post-season. It allows a team to really shut the door of a game as well as keep a team in the game. And a pen with the main cogs as Hermy/Wagner/Marte/Politte/Cotts and than on the outside of that Jenks is pretty stinking ridiculous. Having either Jose or El Duque for a game 4 isn't exactly a weakness. With the cost starting at guys like BMac and Anderson for a top SP, the sox would blow their load on this upgrade alone. The playoff bullpen would have either Jose or Orlando as the long man as well. With a stacked pen, the sox could alternate days with basically 3 guys throwing per day, each with an off day. That doesn't even take into account the off days for a playoff series. Fresh arms to keep the SP's at 6 strong innings. Big bullpen arm, and a #2 type hitter.
