  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 21, 2005 -> 03:09 AM) Of course on the other end of things, Duque may just be a little tired and Ozzie and the staff know that Duque has been known to break down so they figure they could have Bmac come up, get his feet wet, and get a few starts at this level while keeping Duque fresh (hell its possible, although I doubt it). Just throwing out some other possibilities. I think your scenario is more likely than a serious type injury. That we haven't heard anything about El Duque's arm in the days right after he last threw leads me to believe this is a precautionary move.
  2. Bmac isn't coming up to pitch in the bullpen. If he's on his way to Wrigley, he's starting
  3. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ May 17, 2005 -> 03:42 PM) Jenks is turning it around I seen him with the Cedar Rapids Kernels Iowa (low A) team in 2001 pitches would be called for him and he wouldn't throw them he was always in the Manager's face getting into druken rages and was way over weigh. But this year he is always the first to arrive working with the strengh coaches always listening to Razor and Rich Dotson I think it is a level of trust that he seems to have with them he throws the pitches that are called for him by catcher and he has lost around 20 pounds. Bobby hit 100 yesterday on a fouled bunt in the 9th, then followed it with a 0-2 curve for strike 3 called. Dave Wilder has said that he thinks the only thing stopping Bobby was Bobby and I give him tons of credit becuase he is working on it. Is Dotson the pitching coach in AA? I know he had some drinking problems of his own, that affected his career. May be some of his insights and advice are rubbing off on Jenks.
  4. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 19, 2005 -> 10:31 AM) Well, most people here said that it would come down to either Timo or Willie. I guess we were right. And Willie has performed off the bench when he's had opportunities. Unless Timo has some dirt on Ozzie or KW, he's gawn
  5. I could see it. With Ozuna able to play LF and Willie CF, with Carl probably seeing some time in LF or RF, Timo could be replaced. POds, Aaron and Dye could get some rest w/o Timo being around. The only thing keeping him on this roster is his defense. Yet with the Sox regulars not needing a defensive replacement, Timo's excess baggage
  6. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ May 15, 2005 -> 05:44 PM) Frank says he will not take any fielding at all during his minor league rehab and will not do any fielding at all any time this year. Sounds like he's in a lot more pain than he has been letting on if that's the case. I don't think the pain has anything to do with Frank playing 1b. If he plays the IF, he increases his chances of re-injuring his foot. Let the big man hit, and run the bases. If he can handle that, he'll be fine. The sox don't need him at 1B. They just need him to DH.
  7. QUOTE(Ishmookie @ May 16, 2005 -> 02:47 AM) This is gonna be a fun summer. I have a feeling that attendance will skyrocket and if (and a big if) we do well next weekend at the shrine we will start gaining Chicago's attention. This could lead to a big change in the amount of Sox fans in the city add that with media attention and Cubs futility and the new renovations and Chicago is ripe for a change. WE NEED TO WIN THOUGH!!!!! Beating the Cubs won't help or hurt attendance. Staying in 1st place with one of the best records in baseball is the key to the sox getting more fans to the park, as well as increased local and national attention.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 12, 2005 -> 05:56 PM) Completely agree, just check out my sig, I think Anderson is one of the bright spots of our system. Only should an injury occur. I'm not for promoting him because a vet is going through a slump. And Anderson won't come up for that purpose
  9. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 12, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) Anderson is 100 times the player that Joe is, he would be a hell of an upgrade over him. I think he needs a shot sometime this year to see if he can produce. Which is why I said Anderson should be considered if Carl goes down. Having Timo and Pablo play more than their UTL roles is a Dusty Baker move that would turn out bad.
  10. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 12, 2005 -> 05:19 PM) There's another month & 1/2 before the break for these guys to turn it around. But if they are still struggling by the break be rest assured the Sox will be opening to dealing any of them with the exception of AJ. Except Ozzie has said publicly he's sticking with the guys he has, and doesn't see the need to add guys let alone deal them away. Getting rid of guys who are slumping yet are proven big league hitters won't help team chemistry a bit. And TB won't take an old SP making a lot of cash. They want young cheap arms
  11. QUOTE(Randar68 @ May 12, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) Rogo and Fields could both play 1st potentially, as could Ryan Sweeney, IMO. Aren't all 3 guys athletic enough to make the move? Nothing like having guys who are flexible.
  12. QUOTE(JimH @ May 12, 2005 -> 04:58 PM) Yes I agree, and would further guess they've got their 1st rounder pretty well narrowed down by now. Another area of concern, as you mentioned is 1B. Not only for depth, but also for an impact type guy. A pure hitter with power ... we do not have much of that in the system either, Fields notwithstanding. Edit: anybody think it might be John Mayberry Jr.? 1B, righthanded power bat, Stanford connection (KW), family from this area? If Crede continues playing solid ball this year, the sox could sign him to a deal, thereby having Josh Fields move to 1B? I thought I read that somewhere. Maybe some columnist surmising
  13. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 12, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) No way! Anderson is the heir-apparent in RF. Period. I am not mortgaging the future for Wagner who has never pitched in the AL. Especially when Hermanson is emerging as the dominant closer right now. I think you need to put that in perspective. He finished with the Giants as their closer converting 17 out of 20 save opps in 2004 mostly in one 1/2 of baseball. Now he's yet to surrender an earned run. We are 1/2 way thru the 1st half almost & he has yet to surrender an earned run. I want the following everyday players in 2006: Pods, Iguchi, Thomas, , Crede, Rowand, Anderson, AJ, Uribe. That's a lineup that could lead the AL in offense. I leave Koney's spot open because it's going to come down to $. If he's willing to sign a contract similar to his last one then keep him. But if he's looking for Drew like money then offer him arbitration & let him walk. Don't let him walk w/out offering him arbitration. He should put up enough HR's to qualify for Type A. If it seems he's most likely to walk by the deadline then make the trade for Huff. He's struggling now which weakens his value some but a HR hitting LH 1B is a commodity that would greatly help the White Sox in the years to come. He can be signed to a contract for less than Koney's last one. It doesn't matter if a closer switches leagues, like it would for a SP. A closer faces pinch hitters and doesn't have the free out in the 9th spot like a SP. Wagner would be fine in the AL. And Sweeney is the heir apparent in RF. Anderson is a CFer. I'm not even sure if Anderson has even played RF [though I surmised that he could be called up if Everett's leg injury puts him on the DL] The sox won't add a big bat like Huff, unless an injury occurs. The sox aren't going to bring in a big name who replaces a regular doing poorly. Ozzie said as much a week or two ago so as not to mess w/ team chemistry. He'll give the guy [pk, Rowand, Dye, AJ, etc] time to work through his slump
  14. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 12, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) No need to mess with a prospect who isn't ready yet. I don't see Brian Anderson being called up this year. We'd probably use Ozuna and Timo accordingly. The Sox used Joe B. when Maggs went down last yr. Anderson could give the sox more than what Joe showed last yr.
  15. I'd say a SS or 2b man who can switch hit or at least hit lefty, who has a good glove, hits for avg. and makes contact. The sox are stocked with RH hitters. WHile the sox have Uribe at SS, if a top prospect came on Juan could move to 2b. Texas A + M's SS Cliff Pennington seems to be a good fit for the Sox--a switch hitter, good glove, has speed, and hits for avg and contact. He has more walks than K's, and has over 20 Sb's.
  16. QUOTE(T R U @ May 11, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) I saw Pennington play last night, he looks pretty good From the sounds of it, he wouldn't be that far away from the bigs. If Pennington did come up fast, Uribe could move to 2b. Is he a switch hitter or just a LH batter?
  17. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ May 12, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) If Everett has sore legs as a DH, forget about his poor defense, but how long could he possibly last playing the field when Thomas gets back? Even with good legs, Everett wasn't going to see much time in the OF. Carl will DH and pinch hit a lot when Frank comes back. I'd much rather have Brian Anderson at 100% who can go full throttle than have Carl at 75%. Better to sit Carl so he can get better than aggravate his sore leg even more and be out longer
  18. QUOTE(JimH @ May 12, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) Brian A. is not on the 40 man roster, which currently stands at 39 BTW. Seeing as Everett is day to day, my best guess is they will fill in with Perez and Ozuna as needed. If it were a longer term situation, they might make a roster move. Is the '15 day DL' the shortest stint someone can go on? I'm thinking yes but does anyone else know for certain.
  19. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ May 12, 2005 -> 01:39 PM) Obviously if we called up Anderson the outfield would look like this... LF-Pods, CF-Anderson, RF-AROW with Dye and Timo sharing time at the DH. I'm not sure it would that obvious. If Anderson couldn't play RF, then he could DH. The key is getting Anderson's bat in the lineup.
  20. Carl's sore hamstring has him day to day. But if he can't go for a few days, it might make more sense to sit him so he can be healthy for later in the yr. Hopefully, this doesn't have anything to do with his injuries last yr. If it is, he should go on the DL. Why have him lost for the yr if the Sox can help it. With that in mind, i could see a Brian Anderson call up. Without Carl, the sox would need some power. Having Timo in the lineup, with Dye at DH, won't cut it. But having Anderson in RF or at DH, probably would. Then the Sox could see what they have in Anderson. Seeing how Gload is injured, this would have been a nice spot to get him some AB's at 1B and Pk at DH. But he's not ready.
  21. QUOTE(Fotop @ May 12, 2005 -> 01:27 AM) But who says we have to be a bullpen by committee? With the way Ozzie is handling the pen, it certainly seems like that's the mode we're set in, but in reality it should be Hermanson out there for the ninth. In all seriousness, Guillen has too quick of a hook at all the wrong times, and he plays way too much with the lefty-right matchup. I'm not necessarily saying Wagner is an awful idea, I'd love to see him on our team. I just don't think the price is going to be right though, and I also believe help on the offensive side is a more glaring need of the team. We'll see if Frank has that great of an impact on the offense, but if the offense still continues to struggle into July, don't you think the flexibility of the remaining available payroll should be used on the offense? I sure do. I like Hermanson for his attitude and his versatility. But by the end of the yr, I see good teams hitting him. If he gets hit, and Marte and Shingo are still a little iffy, the lock down bullpen is gone. Teams that have at least one shut down set up guy with a dominate closer have shown to have good success in the playoffs. Hell, Lidge and Foulke by themselves almost carried their teams. With AJ, Rowand, PK, Dye, Pods and CArl hitting below their career avgs, the offensive help will come from their improvement, as well as from Frank
  22. QUOTE(Fotop @ May 12, 2005 -> 12:14 AM) I certainly buy the reasoning, the Phillies have a track record of wanting a king's ransom for any of their players. If that weren't true then guys like Polanco wouldn't be rotting away on their bench, and Howard would have gotten dealt last year. Realistically, with the way the market would shape up (w/wagner being the elite player, and many teams looking for a closer) do you think the Sox would overpay for Wagner? I mean Hermanson hasn't given up a single run this year, Politte has been lights out, Marte has been decent, and Shingo can't be that bad can he? Personally, I think it's been the management of the bullpen that has made them look like a weakness this year and their deficiencies have been overblown (esp. on this site). My concerns lie with the offense, so to me by pumping all of the money we may have left into Wagner makes me somewhat hesitant. That's why I think Gonzalez is the pickup here, if the bullpen is as bad as people are trying to say. Then, you have some flexibility to add a bat or two which helps shore up the offense. I'm not suggesting the sox bullpen is bad. It's very solid. Just if it could be made stronger and potentially dominating one, it would make the sox ready to win for a short playoff series. And the Phillies are very close to melt down mode. They need to retool their lineup even more than the Sox did after 2004. A sell off isn't far away
  23. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ May 12, 2005 -> 12:04 AM) You don't trade one of your best rated prospects for a role player that may only be there for a year or so. Don't ever suggest gutting your system. We did this 2 or 3 years in a row with no success. A trade of Brian Anderson wouldn't "gut" the Sox system. With Pods, Rowand and Dye around for two yrs, Sweeney would be ready for RF. As far as trading goes, the only prospect worth anything the Sox parted with is Reed, and the Sox have Garcia for it. A solid #2, #3 SP who can eat innings for a young OFer = worth the price Any trade would get the Sox ready to win deep in the playoffs. For a team that hasn't had many shots at the playoffs, let alone a W.S., trading a top minor leaguer in order to win in 2005 might be well worth it.
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 11, 2005 -> 06:41 PM) Dotel was the best deadline closer last season, right? Am I missing someone? Who did Oakland give up? Teahan? Who else...? I know Teahan is a good prospect, but he certainly isn't a top prospect. They didn't have to give up their Brian Anderson (Nick Swisher) for Dotel, yet we should give up Anderson to get Wagner? And I realize that Wagner is better than Dotel, don't get me wrong. But I don't see the need in giving up Anderson/Sweeney/McCarthy... My main point of the post was to get people thinking, would it be worth giving up a top prospect for a top notch closer? [probably the most pressing need for the sox by the deadline] If the Sox could get a guy like Wagner for less, great.
  25. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ May 11, 2005 -> 04:25 PM) Wagner is 33 years old. His numbers through May 11: 14 IP 0.63 ERA 0.70 WHIP .160 BAA He's a Top 5 closer for sure, and IMO Top 3 along with Nathan and Gagne. He isn't worth Sweeney or Anderson? Yeah, right. Having a Top closer is overrated
