Machado: Update - Manny, do you officially like us?
thxfrthmmrs replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I know Bob is not widely respected here, but he tweeted out last night Machado will he getting final offers this week, and I think the biggest red flag is with how much uncertainty around the situation, it’s hard for him to know they had planned a conference to announce the signing on Jan 7th last week. -

I’ve been saying from the get go that he’s likely getting bad second hand info from someone close to Machado’s circle. But it’s completely on him that he put so much faith on it and tried to put down people who doubted his credibility along the way. I think that’s a lesson learned for him if he were to continue with his “gig”. -

I think @Chicago White Sox pointed out he also likely did not have real intel and was purely going on a hunch. It doesn’t look like he has close ties to the Yankees anymore. Again, he might be right at the end, but in Clark’s case he has tweeted out a lot more specificities, like how all final offers were submitted, Machado is already set to pick the Yankees, they will hold conference on Jan 7th, Andujar is staying with the team, etc. It’s those false details that’s coming back to bite him. -

Either way he gets no sympathy from me because how big of a douche he has been. The guy acts like a 15 year old trying to be cool and not any resemblance of a professional journalist. -

Kudos to those who were calling Clark’s tweet BS last week. Now that the big boys are returning to work, all signs point to him spewing BS without real information last week. He was either trying to strike first with a scoop by picking the most likely scenario while others are taking the week off, or he was fed with bad information and wanted to go down in flame with it. -

Even if they were trade Andujar, they could easily hold off on a announcing the smaller deal, which is Tulo signing, if they want to have more leverage here. I don't even think the Yankees-MM negotiation is in the late stages at this point. -

If Manny to Yankees is done deal like you’ve been pushing the envelope for, we would’ve heard about rumors of them shopping Andujar by now. -

I couldn’t imagine for a league minimum deal, a first division team like the Yankees is the only team who offered Tulo a deal. Tulo chose Yankees for a reason. Winning is one of them, playing time should be the other (at least until Didi is back). -

So if you’re signing Machado and he wanted to play SS, and you have an opening at SS for the foreseeable future, why go sign another SS? Let’s see what Clark says on this one. -

Would you still fire Hahn if Moncada turns out to be an above average 2B, Lopez and Gio are solid 3/4 starters, and you get a 66.7% success rate on Eloy/Cease/Kopech hitting their ceiling, and get another 3-4 from rest solid MLB regulars rest of the top 20 prospects? Nothing happened in 2018 that suggests this wouldn’t be the likely outcome. Hahn inherited an awful farm system and was asked to rebuild on the fly from 2012-16 with limited resources. He shown was given the green light for a full rebuild he made a slew of strong moves to jump start this rebuild. Now is a waiting game to see where these prospects take us. 2 years is not enough to determine Hahn has failed in this rebuild and needs to get the boot. -

Rebuilds don’t happen in a year or two. FWIW most posters were excited about the big 3 trades when it happened, and some were also able giving stamps of approval on the Rutherford trade. The draft philosophy has changed in the last few years where plate discipline is being emphasized. We made the sexy move by going for the biggest name in J2 signing. Most fans were happy about these moves when they happened, so calling for firing of them after 2 years (especially Hahn) is asinine, epecially since the minors were mauled by injuries this year. Give Hahn another 2 years with these prospects before bringing out the lynch mob. -

The longer this goes unacknowledged by other new outlets the better the situation is for the Sox. You just know someone somewhere is trying to confirm with either party whether a deal is in place but 24 hours has passed and not a peep. I also pointed out the MLBTR thing today and it basically shows even they are questioning the legitimacy of this "news". -

Ok, that's sounds about right according to #7 here. https://medium.com/@dffreedman/competitive-balance-tax-complicates-teams-decisions-during-all-seasons-bec75562521a -

I’ve never heard pension and healthcare plans being factored into luxury tax accounting, unless there is some special circumstances. Yankees are projected to be at $180M right now, $26M away from luxury tax if they don’t move a contract. Signing Machado would almost certainly put them into luxury tax. That’s not factoring in their pursuit of a high leverage reliever, which would cost them another $8-10M. MLB luxury tax will have multi-year impact on teams and it’s not something teams want to go into unless they have to. If Yankees do sign Manny, they will most likely be in luxury tax the next several years, and being repeat offenders is when it becomes a bigger issue. -

But literally none of the things you pointed out prevents media outlets reporting Machado and Yankees has deal in place, physicals and press conferences both happens at a later time. You are not willing to acknolwege the most likely scenario, that Machado isn’t going to give any team the confirmation until after the New Years and that Clark was just jumping the gun based on what he heard (which could have a different agenda). -

I have never once said Sox had the biggest offer. I am advocating that Clark’s report does not suggest this process being complete and either Sox or Phillies COULD still make one last offer to sway Machado the other way. But you’re already making assumption that the deal is done they’re already arranging physicals and coordinating a time to announce signing, when literally no other new outlet has picked up on this transpiring (I will say until this happens no agreement is in place) . I guess it makes you feel better and leap to conclusion you were right that Sox has failed again. -

Agreements are announced to be pending physicals and once physicals are done signing conferences takes place. Again there hasn’t been a concrete report of agreement between Yankees and Machado and you’re already drawing your conclusions of things that secretly happened behind the scenes. What does it say about your view on this whole process? -

Signing press conferences happen at a later date all the time. If there is any sort of handshake agreement between the two parties, more sources would have confirmed by now. I don’t believe there is any sort of agreement right now. -

We don’t know what exactly was said to Clark, but his latest tweet made it seem like things could still change last minute if the “final” offers were to change. -

That’s why if it’s just a guy spreading rumors and teams haven’t been informed (indications are Yankees haven’t been), then it’s just a ploy to drive up bidding. I am not saying Yankees won’t likely end up with Manny, but it’s still a money’s game right now.
