  1. Garcia's horrendous defence really hurts his overall value. Combine that with his tendency to hit the ball on the ground and he has a long way to go.
  2. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 05:07 PM) Great Win! Lets get the sweep! It sucked that Minnesota pretty much gave us the victory but I only saw the 11th inning, so maybe that doesn't tell the whole story. I also thought it was hilarious that Adam Dunn had no idea that the winning run was scoring as he was pimping his walk. Thats okay though, I'd rather he just be focused on hitting, and he did have a good at bat. Go Sox! We would've won it before extras if the ump didn't screw Jones out of 2 big strikes (and Veal, to a lesser extent). And possibly if he didn't inadvertently block an errant throw, although I guess that still would have counted as the Twins giving us the win.
  3. Wonder has any run ever scored via an 0-2 bunt, balk and 2 wild pitches before.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) who is the emergency pitcher today? I know we still have Lindstrom Erik Johnson
  5. Worth pointing out that even with our pitchers' poor control, the home plate ump has had a horrible second half to this game. Screwed Jones twice and Veal didn't get the benefit on a couple of curve balls that went through the zone and dropped away.
  6. This ump can't call breaking balls that break low to the catcher after going through the zone
  7. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) Leury Garcia up...... I knew it(!)
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) No, amateur sabermetricians care. You are a huge idiot
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) Who cares about xFIP. Major League Baseball teams?
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 03:08 PM) Hey look, the guy who wanted to spend every available dime in the free agent market on mediocre pitching is complaining about spending money in the free agent market on mediocre pitching. I'd be more worried about how he thinks Nate Jones, he of the 2.77 xFIP last season, is "awful".
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Nate Jones is awful Get the f*** out of here
  12. 10.6K announced attendance. How many of those ended up in the ballpark?
  13. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) Garcia is a automatic out. Looking at Rios early too, man
  14. Man, it's a good thing he walked there, would've flipped my s*** with that strike called at 3-1 considering the calls Jones got
  15. Jones wasn't good but he had two awful calls go against him, one which made it 2-1 instead of 1-2 which ended up in a 3-2 walk, and one strike 3 not called which lead to an RBI double.
  16. Strike straight down the middle called a ball there
  17. If Abreu can hit over .200 his glove will pay for his contract easy
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) Dan Hayes estimates about 15k in attendance. WHAT
  19. Was just watching Addison Reed closing for the Diamondbacks and it got me thinking about watching players the Sox traded away. Do you: a) Hope they do as badly as possible so the Sox win the trade b) Hope they do ok: because if you keep trading away guys who do terribly it'll make GMs wary of trading with the Sox (and also I guess it's not nice to see someone sad or whatever), but if he does too well you'll be annoyed at losing him c) Hope they do as well as possible, presuming you liked them as a White Sox d) do not give one solitary s*** Probably b) for me.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 06:27 PM) I doubt it. The Sox don't throw their kids into those roles very quickly. Even a guy like Addison Reed had to win the job, and he was closer of the future the day that he was drafted. Jenks also spent time in middle relief before winning the job. I go with the theory that if they think Nate is the best reliever, they want to be able to use him at anytime in innings 6-8, instead of just inning 9. Rick Hahn was asked why Lindstrom got the job and he was going on about how well he did in Spring. Where he pitched a grand total of 3.0 innings. Using Jones in higher leverage situations is a possible factor as well, although I believe it usually works out that closers face higher leverage situations than any other reliever. I'm sure Hahn will be aware though that if Jones started as closer, he would have stood to make $5m-$10m more in arbitration than holding him back until after the trade deadline.
  21. Lindstrom being closer is absolutely about both his trade value and Nate Jones's arbitration payout. Gillaspie hitting third is more about lefty/righty balance I think, but trade value could be a factor.
