QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 08:26 PM) Loading up a reliever with saves to boost his trade value doesn't work anymore. If a reliever pitches well in a set up role that's enough. *cough* Addison Reed* cough Not that he's not a talented pitcher but Kevin Towers definitely thought of 40 saves at some point during evaluating Reed. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 12:02 PM) Any confirmation Sox won't owe Boggs money for this year? Rotoworld makes it seem like they'll owe him 1.1 A couple of sources said at the time of the signing the $1.1m was guaranteed only if he made the 25-man roster. Given his release I'd say that's a safe bet.
-
Boggs's contract is dependent on him making the 25-man roster, right?
-
Yeah I'm not sure at all on any report that downplays Micah's speed. Only going on eye test from Spring Training, but he's lightning.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 21, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Lopez at 12 and Engel at 14 are interesting. See the catch-all thread for some pipeline discussion about their list. Lopez at 12 is VERY interesting, now that I think about it, especially given his relative age and that he'll miss time this year with an injury. Is Lopez injured? -
Tyler Flowers is your 2014 starting catcher

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 01:32 AM) Other GM's knew he wasn't in our long-term plans, and he certainly has a number of negatives attached to him...his sometimes surly relationship with fans, his "aloofness" on the field especially when things aren't going well, the 2009 and 2011 seasons, the fact that we still had to give them $1 million, etc. It turned out a lot better than it looked like after 2011, when we had around $35 million or so still due on his contract. Or just look at the situation with Nelson Cruz, how long it took him to find a job and the lower salary he's receiving. It's easy to say we should have gotten the Pirates or Cardinals or whatever team to accept our Rios deal...but we often never know exactly what was offered, so while it's nice to argue that Hahn turned down, say, Tabata or Carlos Martinez or Wong, it's all conjecture. Sure, and it's not like I'm saying he did badly or whatever, as I said it was probably market-dictated rather than a Hahn misstep, I'm just saying that it's the only deal that you could make the argument for the other side coming out on top. -

The only return to be in any way disappointed over was Leury Garcia for Alex Rios, with Rios probably being a 3+ WAR player these days, but that was due to it being done on waivers after the trade deadline. It's likely the market just wasn't there for him because of his 2009 and 2011, although there were rumours of Hahn overplaying his hand and asking for Profar/high Pirates prospects. Either way, he more than made up for it with the Eaton and Davidson trades, Eaton in particular could be an enormous steal. -
Yeesh, rough night for the top-rated college arms
-
Besides the bonus stuff I thought his comment on Rodon was interesting, given a) Beede's start to the year and b) the strong possibility that Rodon will be gone by 3 and other college arms being in play for the Sox at that point.
-
lol at Adam Dunn, Gillaspie hits a grounder with one out and Dunn on first, when the ball was thrown to second for the first out, Dunn was halfway back to the bench.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 21, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) I'm wondering which of the names we've discussed might fall into this category. I'm guessing NOT Rodon. Yeah it's curious, no real obvious candidates amongst the top prospects at the moment. lol at Hawk: "In all my 55 years in the game, this White Sox club has more young talent than any team I've ever seen"
-
From the game thread: QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Mar 21, 2014 -> 04:23 PM) Rick Hahn in the booth talking about the draft. Calls Rodon "certainly the best college arm", talks about the possibility of going for a lower-bonus guy at 3 and spreading money throughout the later picks.

Did this get done?

2 months of Davidson at AAA now (and it's not like he has mastered that level already), and the Sox get another year out of him when they figure to contend. Plus if Gillaspie can show some improvement from last year he could be a reasonable piece given the dearth of 3Bs around right now.

United overcame Moyes (and Olympiakos) to reach the Champions League quarters tonight, gonna be nice to see off the old gal for at least 18 months with a sound pasting in the last 8. -
