I don't doubt that Cease was discussed in trade talk this offseason to the extent that other teams kept asking about him. I highly doubt the Sox actually offered Cease for 2 years of Thor.

That may be true but I'm not sure how accurate the numbers are right now. For example, Mazara still doesn't have one and there are two active players (Keuchel and Cordero) listed as #60.
Keuchel will almost certainly be wearing #60. Cordero will likely receive an ATV, or a boat, or some other insanely generous gift for switching his number.

Don't really see the fit with Maybin, to be honest.

Well, you know if the Cardinals are trading for Arenado, Gorman is a lock to be heading to Colorado as his replacement. You know the Rockies will also want pitching and the Cardinals didn’t have much until now so Liberatore will be in the deal. Carlson’s stock has soared and would make a nice replacement for an aging Blackmon and allow them to trade him for more young talent. An outfield of Dahl, Tapia, and Carlson would be nice.
Speculating on cash amounts is too hard.
The return for a guy with minimal surplus value on a market rate deal shouldn't be 3 top 40 prospects. Even if there were no money involved. That is a crazy good return.

Matt Liberatore, Dylan Carlson, and Nolan Gorman for Arenado and cash. Do the Rockies say no?
Cash is a pretty big factor there. How much cash? If like $20M, that is such a no brainer for the Rockies. Who is beating that? That is like trading Cease, Madrigal and Vaughn for him. Crazy town.

One thing i learned is to never doubt the Rays.
I doubt their fans feel the same. They haven't advanced past the division series since 2008 when they beat the Sox. Did make the playoffs 4/11 seasons, but haven't won a series.
The Rays do it an interesting way and very cheapy, but its not like they've actually done anything with it.

This trade makes no sense for the Rays unless they really don’t like Liberatore.

Oof. So they traded for him when he needed protection that soon. Obviously wasn't an issue on the 40 man then, but is now. It's a loss at the margins but it's still a loss.
yah, but it also shows how far the Sox have come in such a short amount of time when we now have a 40 man roster that is is at least 90% occupied by players that have real value to the organization. Always sucks to lose someone, but it is just another sign that some real progress has been made.
I do expect a rebuilding org to gobble Medeiros up, though.

Yea, but Dylan fucking Covey.
Covey is a little ways down the list, fellas.

I'm almost certain he'll get claimed. Maybe they should have just exposed him in the rule 5. Personally I would have rather cut Seby but maybe they prefer catching depth to pitching right now. Although I don't think Seby is any sort of real depth.
Zavala will very likely be the one DFA'd for Cishek. So I wouldn't get too worked up about that.
And exposing Medeiros to the rule 5 draft wasn't an option in 2019. He was added to the 40 man in 2018.

Is Medeiros gone yet? I'm guessing he clears waivers and just gets outrighted to AAA.
Exactly. He’s interesting enough, has options, throws left handed and has a pedigree that I wouldn’t be totally shocked if he gets claimed.

What a dilemma, Twins mortgaging the future or Cubs getting a haul for a quick "rebuild". The Cubs could easily bounce back in 2021 if Lewis breaks out in the minors this year.
Yah, I don't really give 2 fucks about the Cubs, so doesn't affect me much. Get it from a traditional Sox fan perspective tho.

I would love to see the Twins trade Lewis + Graterol/Balazovic + Larnach for 2 years of Bryant. The Twins would really be doubling down on 2020 and 2021 - without much pitching - and their outlook for 2023 on would be pretty terrible.

Agreed, I can’t remember a time watching baseball and seeing a hitter so overmatched at the level he was at. I know it was SSS, but eye test was awful.
AJ Reed comes to mind. God was he just horrible in his short Sox stint.

Worst OAA in MLB:
- Vlad Guerrero Jr. (-16)
- Jorge Polanco (-16)
- Fernando Tatis Jr. (-13)
- Didi Gregorius (-13)
- Jonathan Villar (-12)
- Tim Beckham (-9)
- Kevin Newman (-8)
- Gleyber Torres (-7)
As I've said here many times, the Twins IF defense is horrific. Sano and Arraez were both in the bottom 10% as well.
Won't be long before they move Polanco off SS.

He’s obviously plenty attractive if he can receive three offers of more than $100 million and at least four years at his age.
Sounds like he probably hasn't gotten a single offer that is actually close to $110M based on the recent reporting.

Won't Ryan Burr be a part of the pen's equation, once he is finished with his rehab, for TJS? The Sox re-signed him, last month.
He's going to miss at least half the season before he's throwing in games. So he may factor in late, but certainly not before the ASB.

They announced the NRIs on Jan 23 last year.
Thanks!

Mentioned this in the catchall, but this may be a better spot for it..
When are the Sox going to announce their non-roster ST invites and other milb deals? I know a few have sprinkled in - Detwiler, Delmonico, Cuthbert, Frare, Burr - but I expect there will be many more, especially guys from outside the org. Merkin mentioned in a tweet a couple weeks ago that that slew of NRI guys would be announced after the new year, but I haven't seen it.

I want them to DFA Covey because I would cry tears of joy if he never pitched for the Sox again.
Don't get your hopes up. He has an option remaining, and despite all Sox fans thinking he's terrible (because he has been) and just wanting to cut bait, he is actually somewhat useful depth to have in AAA. So I highly doubt he's going anywhere, but I share your thoughts that I hope he doesn't throw a pitch in the big leauges for the Sox in 2020.

No word that I have seen on if Guerrero has cleared or not.
My guess is Zavala and Medeiros will go for EE and Cishek. Sounds like EE is taking his physical today, so we should hear about 1 of them today.
Purely my opinion, but I think you could group the back end of the 40 man as follows:
- High risk of not making it to ST on the 40 man: Zavala (2 options) and Medeiros (2 options)
- Next grouping of guy's that can't feel too safe, likely in order: Fulmer (0 options), Foster, (3 options), Ruiz (1 option) Covey (1 option)
- Doubt they're going anywhere right now: Engel (1 option), Basabe (1 option), Mercedes (3 options), Rutherford (3 options) Cordero (0 options)
I personally think Sox will hang onto Fulmer, give him last pen spot out of ST, and DFA him shortly thereafter when he's much more likely to clear and stay in the org than if he was DFA'd between now and OD. Foster is a tough one as he was a surprise add to the 40 man for me personally. I am not attached to him at all, but clearly Sox saw enough to protect him, so I would assume he survives the offseason.

I don't see Medeiros getting DFA'd. When he went to the pen, he was pretty good. Zavala, Ruiz, Covey, Fulmer I see all go before him.
My prediction is Zavala and Ruiz will be DFA'd for Encarnacion and Cishek.
Possible, but I think Ruiz is pretty safe. He is a big arm and an option remaining. I also don't see the Sox DFAing Covey right now. Fulmer I guess I could see, but I actually think he'll get on last chance on the OD roster.
Sox Officially Sign Edwin Encarnacion (1YR/$12M), Kodi Medeiros DFA
