  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 03:06 PM)
    The White Sox can dictate what they want for Sale, in my opinion. If they're not able to clear payroll to go out and acquire an ace to take Sale's role, then you don't do the deal.

    They have the payroll space to get an ace as is. I agree they can dictate what they want for Sale, but they're simply not going to drag down the return in any trade involving Chris Sale. The whole convo is dumb, because unless some team wants to clear out a top tier farm system, they're not getting him.

  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 03:02 PM)
    You're not lowering the return by giving up Danks if you're going for all of the young "studs" they have in their organization.

    Yes you would.

    Let's just say the Sox were to trade Sale and Danks to the Red Sox...

    The Red Sox, without any doubt, would give up more for just Chris Sale. Adding Danks to the deal would lower the return prospect-wise.

    Sale isn't getting traded, but if Boston decides to offer Betts, Boegaerts, Swihart, Owens and Cecchini..Rick isn't going to say, "well Ben, I am going to need to to take John Danks as well. Hell, you can keep Mookie."

  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 02:57 PM)
    Which is why unloading Danks' contract would be a must in any deal

    No it shouldn't. Why lower the return just to get rid of Danks. It's dumb. Danks goes in a move for another overpaid player, or he is on the Sox. It is that simple. They're aren't going to do another "Teahen move" where they pair Danks with an asset just to get rid of him. Dumb dumb dumb.

  4. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 01:58 PM)
    Other threads say the White Sox have ~$15M or so to spend to get into the low $90M range.

    Not sure how much of that ~$15M is for free agents or players making minimum salaries to fill out the roster, but it seems, if that number is right, that the Sox can maybe add another 1 or 2 role player type(s), but they would be up against that 90M fairly quickly.

    Unless the Sox are looking to spend $110M or so, it's hard to see them competing for any premier free agents.

    Rock has stated within the past few days that he thinks the SOX have room to go up to $105M-$110M.

  5. QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 12:03 PM)
    I am not sure I buy this. Hahn has said that they have put more of a focus of developing talent from within and making their system stronger and look to keep that in tact. They don't want to put themselves back in the cellar of minor league systems again. However they have said that they have some money to spend. I think they want to spend to acquire this year while keeping the talent in tact.

    Agreed. It seems to contradict what they've been saying that past 18 months. Obviously FAs these days are getting paid exorbitant amounts of $$, so trying to trade for someone makes some sense, but the logic is sort of assbackwards if you have to give up young talent, or someone who contributes off your ML roster to do so.

    I either see the SOX trading for an overpaid RH starter and eating the contract, so the prospect price would be less, or signing a FA in the 2nd tier (Masterson, Peavy, E. Santana, Vazquez) or 3rd tier (Hammel, McCarthy, Vogelsong).

  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 08:05 PM)
    Predicting some sort of buy-low option in the rotation. Sort of like the Paulino deal except with a guy who has actually had success (Morrow, Medlen, Beachy, etc.)

    Morrow would be an excellent signing.

  7. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 09:34 AM)
    My thoughts exactly. With a huge year and being a free agent at 28, he will get a 6-8 year deal about 25 mill a season

    Upton would be great, but the price to acquire him would far outweigh the one year he would wear a SOX uni. Not worth it.

  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 04:25 PM)
    I would be content moving our corner OF spots from terrible to tolerable next year. Let Jose, Chris, and Jose carry the team, just don't drag them down with a black hole in the corner OF.

    I don't disagree with you. I would be content with Saunders in LF as well. Just think Rick & Co. have their minds on a bigger prize..

  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 01:37 PM)
    Stab in the dark prediction: Viciedo + Beck to SEA for Saunders

    I would like this trade, but the worst part about acquiring Saunders is that it would most likely take us out of the running for a real impact LF. I think that is what this team needs most.

    That said, I would take Saunders and a top tier RHP over, say, Ethier and some scrapheap RHP or just rolling with Bassit in the 5 spot. All depends on which way Ricky goes, but I'd be surprised to see him acquire a mid-tier LF without seeing what he can get his hands on at the winter meetings next week.

  10. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 12:10 PM)
    Always sucks that finals week in school is during the same week as the Winter Meetings...so hard to focus with so many rumors going on. At least all my finals fall on Monday morning and Tuesday.

    Hana yep been there. Haven't missed that part of school.

  11. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 11:33 AM)
    Anyone think it could be for Justin Upton? Seeing as though he is available and would be a great addition to the middle of the lineup. What do you guys think it would take? Hawkins, one of Danish and Montas and a second baseman to replace La Stella (who was penciled in to start there but was traded)?

    For one year of upton?? PASS!

  12. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:20 PM)
    upgrade would be marginal. Sub .700 OPS the last 2 years.

    Flowers was a warrior out there last year; barely had a day off.

    LF, SP, DH and some defense in LF are much greater needs.

    How about some young players with upside?

    I'd take him, but I wouldn't give up much. You can a lot worse than a Flowers / Montero platoon.

  13. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:00 PM)
    I have to image it would be quintana plus just for bruce. Bruce has 3 yrs on his contract. The Cardinals paid for 1 yr of Heyward and 2 yrs of Walden with 4 yrs of miller and 6 yrs of jenkins. Can't imagine what the red would want for bruce. Tho I can't believe the reds have latos, leake, cueto and Simon all going into free agency next yr. That's sucks to lose 4 starting pitchers all at once.

    Quintana is a far more valuable asset. It really isn't even close.
