What are the odds of someone claiming him off waivers in a CB move and Jerry just telling Getzy to walking away from the rest of the salary and buyout? I didn't believe a single word that came out of Getz' mouth in that interview yesterday.
54 minutes ago, Lip Man 1 said:Neither Getz nor the organization has earned the benefit of the doubt but given his comments yesterday for JR to then order him to just waive Robert would make him look very bad. And it's not like Getz would say that JR ordered him to do it.
I don't think JR would put him in that situation at least not so soon.
This would make no sense. They could have done a salary dump yesterday, accepted the best of the bad offers, and be free of the buyout amount and the rest of his prorated salary.
It isn't rocket science. Robert will make $20 mil next year. Robert (on the open market) or his replacement would probably cost the team 50-75% of that amount. It wasn't worth it to the team to accept a subpar package if they think they can trade him next year for something worthwhile by spending only an additional $5-7 million.
The only way they don't pick up the option is if he completely embarrasses himself or has some catastrophic injury before the end of the season.
If they just wanted to save money, they could have dumped him 24 hours ago and people would have been cool with that.

They probably won’t go 500 the rest of the way, but WestEddy is right that this is not the same team from April. That’s not a controversial opinion.

I love how Soxtalk seamlessly transitions from prematurely hyperventilating about Getz not trading Houser to prematurely hyperventilating about hypothetical bad free agent signings that may occur in 8 months because the GM said they want to spend money on the team.

Or you can expect they will waste money on 2nd or 3rd tier players and expect kudos for it.
I thought you always say it’s too early for them to sign a top tier free agent. Is that someone else?

Getz said they're looking to add this winter.
That sounds like good news to me.

Again… why are people making “the money will be spent” jokes in a thread about the team leaning towards overpaying a player with a high ceiling when they could have easily done a salary dump today?

All I’m saying is you can’t be mad that they don’t spend and then also be mad that they didn’t do a salary dump. It’s one or the other.

If the team was as stingy as a lot of people here claim, why wouldn’t they have just dumped him for a couple trash prospects?

Mike Soroka was traded yesterday.
When everyone is making moves and youre not, it's likely you misread the market and valued your guys incorrectly. Thats just my opinion of course.
Everyone making moves? Bieber, Soroka, and a few minutes ago, Kelly have been dealt. What other SPs have moved?

I won’t be mad at a light return. It’s better than nothing at all. Houser and Civale are gone after this season. What are you not understanding?

You think the league is colluding to not value Sox players and only send Getz s%*# offers?
You can't always excuse a trade or non-trade with the idea that you didn't know the other offers out there. If that's the case, why even come comment here at all?
Its not collusion. If Houser is like the 6th most desirable SP on the market and 1-2 SPs have been moved, what is he supposed to do? Force the other teams to want Houser over Gore?
12 minutes ago, WhiteSox2023 said:You sell them for the best offer regardless. Something is better than nothing and the Sox already have guys that can eat innings. They will both be free agents after this season. If Getz wants either guy back, he can offer them a contract in the offseason.
I'm sure you'd be real forgiving if he just started giving guys away.

Why are there no SPs moving? Bizarre.

This is exactly how I feel. The downside is wasting $20M, but isn’t that actually also a win? Everybody here would be thrilled to rip $20M from JR’s wallet.
Its not even $20M. Its the difference between $20M and the cost of his replacement.
If you sign a guy for $11M, you are putting $9M at risk in hopes that you can deal him for something good.

Robert has been pretty mediocre for 2 full seasons now, there is definitely cause for concern that a bounce back ever happens.
Yeah, I don't think its a slam dunk. But its a risk you can take if you have no payroll and no other options in CF.
If they sign a FA CF like Harrison Bader, what are they paying him? The amount you are risking is the difference between that one year contract and the 20 million you are paying Robert.

The problem with keeping Robert is you are essentially making a $20M gamble. He not only will need to stay healthy, but he will also need to produce like he used to several years ago now.
If there are no offers at all right now for him as a cheap rental, you aren't getting any offers when he's a $20M rental in the offseason which at that point you are now hoping he has an incredible first half. Then you are still facing the reality of trying to trade a rental OFer which as you have seen today isn't worth dick.
I still do not see anyway they exercise this option. It makes zero financial sense for the organization.
Cedric Mullins, Harrison Bader, and the current version of Robert aren't worth dick. If Robert bounces back and has a good end to this year and a good first half next year, teams will pay for him.

Man at least Hahn was able to sell.
Was he though? He sold Eaton. Anyone could have sold Sale. Quintana had a lot of value. Everyone else was traded for junk (Ian Clarkin, Ryan Cordell, Blake Rutherford).

Does anyone know when the App will allow people to login using their Xfinity account to watch remotely?

Your argument is short sighted. Eyeballs and viewers are what generate ad dollars. The more eyes, the more you can charge and it doesn't matter whether its OTA or a part of the cable package.
There's a reason ESPN pays a fortune for the NBA finals and then broadcasts it OTA AND on cable. It increases exposure which will increase eyes in the future. Antennas aren't a great full time solution so that Sox fan with the antenna may by a Comcast package when they move out of range or when they get tired of cloudy days ruining their picture.
As bmags said, sports are about exposure and by limiting exposure you limit growth which reduces eye balls and advertising dollars. Comcast should want MORE viewers in the Chicago area, not less, regardless of whether or not those viewers directly finance them or not.
Ok. I understand. You meant from the perspective of the Teams/Owners of the station?
Yeah, ideally you would be on everything. The problem is that Xfinity doesn't want that and most people still watch their tv through cable. The numbers for antenna users were probably miniscule. In 2025, if you are on OTA and not the largest cable provider in the area, you have limited exposure.

This is unrelated but I do wonder about it a lot. I feel like baseball and most professional sports have gotten out of brand building and have been in pure exploitation. It's worked getting more money out of their core fans who were addicted...but how many others are becoming addicted?
When will the fact that a teenager in the suburbs no longer thinks about a baseball game as something they could do on a random evening in summer. Baseball is a 'premium' event you'd need your parents to pay for.
And baseball is no longer just the background of summer, always on. I need to go to my specific app.
I need to opt-in to baseball. It's not just everywhere.
I am coaching baseball now, the kids all love to play. None of them watch it save for a few who have diehard parents as fans (mostly out of town teams).
At some point baseball won't have their hardcore fans to exploit. When does the switch flip back to growing the game? It's more than making some tiktoks.
I don't think live sports have a perpetual future as a luxury product. It needs to be part of life, mixed in and around it. Not broadway.
Good post. I wonder what the long-term solution is. I bet those kids you coach don't watch cable tv either. A few years ago I asked my nieces in high school and jr high if they ever watch MTV and they looked at me confused.
Outside of a few things like the NFL, there's no more monoculture and everything is becoming its own niche.

I don't think it makes much sense, actually.
You can watch NFL, NBA, and MLB games for free OTA all the time. The NBA Finals game last night was OTA as it always is and I used my antenna to watch it since i cancelled my live-TV packages.
OTA increases your overall audience allowing you to sell more ad's and gain more of an audience and following. Comcast are just assholes.
What doesn't make sense? Xfinity and all cable companies are losing customers at an accelerated rate. One of the biggest reasons remaining customers keep their cable is for live sports. If the customers can just get it for free over the air, there is no reason to keep or sign up for their service and cable will die even sooner.
The NBA finals were over the air because they are the NBA Finals. The World Series will be over the air as well. CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox aren't airing random regular season NBA or MLB games on a weekday night.

Some weird stuff going on with that
Back in the day, they always blacked out the internet feed during games and you had to buy the radio version of mlb.tv (mlb at bat?). I noticed a year or two ago they just began airing the games on the feed. Interesting that they are choosing to enforce that again.

Kenny Williams was 1000 times the GM Getz is. No idea how anyone could argue otherwise.
Getz has been a GM for like a year and a half. In Kenny Williams' first year or two, he traded for the wrong player because he had a similar name to the guy they wanted. What do you think everyone's reaction here would be if that happened today?
I always liked Kenny Williams but how are you comparing a guy who held the job for like 15 years to a guy who has had about 20 months?

Why would Ishbia agree to pay down the Sox debt if there is no guarantee he will get the team, and even if he does it wont be for at least another 4-8 years
He is guaranteed to get the team if he wants it. He holds an option in 2034. Even if Jerry lives to be 115 and doesn't want to sell, Ishbia will be able to buy it.
