A CBS Sports report this week noted that the American Football Coaches Association and the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee have at least tossed around the idea to eliminate kickoffs in college football. The report states player safety as the chief reason. Some say the kickoff is one of the most dangerous plays in the game.

If it were to happen in college, could that trickle down to high school football?

High schools have already gone to if a kick breaks the plane of the end zone it is an automatic touchback.

It would be a bit sad as there has been many dramatic miracle kick returns. But yeah, the act of having these players running back, then turning their bodies to block players coming full speed, has led to a lot of blind side hits and injuries. Fine to change it. Slows the game down too.

Not in Texas. I wonder how many states have adopted that rule?

Here's an idea if they do make the change. Touchdowns result in the ball starting on the 20, field goals on the 30 or even 35.

Let's face it folks, football is all but dead. Numbers of kids being allowed to play is down. You are pretty much guaranteed numerous concussions if you play. Parents aren't going to let their kids play in the future. Think about it. Starting in high school through college a football player would be lucky to not have double digit concussions. Then the speed of the NFL? Cmon concussions on almost every play.

 

This sport has about 20 years left, max. Maybe flag football will take its place.

Only way both will survive ... if the states of Texas and Alabama can churn out enough players to sustain the NFL and college football it "might" last more than 20 years. Hockey? I guess if Canadiens and Russians don't care about concussions and keep playing and supplying players it "might" last a while.

You a partially corrdct. The version of football we know is dying. There is far too much money in the NFL for them not to have it. They will always find a way to keep it going.

But aside from kids in Texas and Alabama, whose going to be out there to play the game? I guess those states could produce enough NFL players. Parents simply cannot allow their kids to play this sport. You basically are assuring your child a shorter life and brain misery, possibly dementia. The sport is dead in 10-20 years unless as I said Texas churns out enough talent to fill NFL rosters.
