How long does Ryu's contract last? That's a ton of payroll for starting pitching, like our 2006-07 teams...

I understand that this may put LA over the top, but in terms of the trade itself, I just feel as though the baseball world is generally overvaluing 3 months of Darvish and underrating Calhoun as a prospect.

 

Calhoun does not really have a defensive position and grades poorly in the field and with arm strength. He's likely a dh long term.

Right, but a DH with his hitting potential is still valuable IMO.

Sure, but once people look past his name and realize that he's not having a very good season, maybe my viewpoint would make more sense. 3 months of mediocrity in the form of a once dominant pitcher is obviously not cheap, but Calhoun's potential is as high as can be for a DH type.

 

Sure, his value takes a hit by his lack of real position, but it is extremely rare for somebody to have the potential to not only be a power hitter with a high average, but to also take many walks and rarely strike out. That combination is almost unheard of and can be lethal.

And, you never know, there's a chance he still makes it somewhere in the field.

I think Calhoun is good, but the Dodgers wanted a good pitcher mid season for a playoff stretch run. Those specific three months hold a lot of value.

 

Plus Darvish gets to move to NL with a dominant pen and play in Dodger stadium. He could pitch 5 innings and rest up.

No one is underrating Calhoun. He clearly has a major league bat but he's been pretty bad defensively. His bat will have to be very good for him to be an impact DH if he can't stick in the infield. Although his minor league offensive numbers have been good enough to think he can be that type of DH. He has more value to an AL team which is why this deal happened.

 

I was just looking at his swing and he has a very noticeable hitch. Not sure how that hasn't been exploited yet.
