October 2, 200322 yr The front page of the paper (not the sports section) had a big picture and story about the retirement of Ron Santo's number. Y'all remember when Harold Baines's number was retired, they did the same thing. Oh, wait..... Guess they missed that one. We even gave them two opportunities.
October 2, 200322 yr Haven't the Cubs only retired like 2 other numbers? Heck, they have a Harry statue outside and nothing for Ernie Banks or other important Cub players. Santo's number was retired for his announcing skills, not playing skills.

He should be in the HOF.

October 2, 200322 yr I was joking. Obviously he was a great player, but he is a lowsy announcer. They respect the lowsy announcers, but not the great players. I still think he would make a great talk show host with Hughes though.

Lord, Harry was pretty bad toward the end there, suddenly infield flies were being called gappers.

And I'll bet he didn't have to use cork to get them :sosasucks

October 3, 200322 yr Santo's number was retired for his announcing skills, not playing skills. Then I expect we will soon see a Joe Carter statue at Chewing Gum Park??? Santo HAS NO announcing skills - he has yelling skills and bad storytelling skills. Pat Hughes is worth triple his salary for carrying Santo to even halfway professional broadcasts.

October 3, 200322 yr I'm with ss2k3. Ron Santo (and yes, Dick Allen) belongs in the HOF. In addition to his HR's he was a multiple time Gold Glove winner and All Star. Add to this the fact that he did it all while battling diabetes. Ron Santo's a HOF'er in my book. Of course, he should go in wearing a Sox cap.
