White Sox 5th Starter? Starting CF?

Featured Replies

Pick next years 5th starter assuming Buehrle, Loaiza, and Garland are a lock and Colon is resigned or the White Sox get a free agent replacement. Tell why you picked ____ as the 5th starter. Personally I think it's Cotts since he's been here before and he's developing that cutter in the AFL. He could be great next year.

For the Starting CF it's most likely going to be Rowand, since Everett may be cut for monetary reasons, which sucks cuz I liked Carl. I am hoping Reed can possibly start and give us a jolt like Rocco Baldelli did last year for Tampa Bay.

Hmm ok I'll pick Jon Rauch for our 5th starter because he really finished the year strong down at Charlotte and he deserves another oppurtunity when he's injury free. Our CF will be Aaron Rowand assuming he doesn't have a dirt bike accident in the off season. Reed needs time at AAA bf he'll come up.

Schoenweiss and Rowand. Of course, if Ozzie's the manager, Rowand may be the pitcher and Shoney the centerfielder.

5th starter between - Rauch, Cotts, Pacheco, Schoenweis or Diaz

CF between - Rowand, Reed or Borchard

Sox cannot cut Everett. He is a free agent, therefore no longer property of the Sox.

I like Carl Everett a lot, but I am not to sure he is our answer in CF. Rowand may get the opportunity again in 2004, but I bet the Sox go into spring training saying the position is up for grabs meaning Borchard may get a look. If we sign Everett he is probably the CF depending on other moves that may be made by KW.

Starting pitcher for the fifth spot will be between Rausch, Wright, Stewart, Cotts and most likely a few low cost free agents (notice I didn't say cheap because I think the Sox won't just sign a bunch of FA's and see what shakes out). Of course if we don't re-sign Colon then two of those guys are legit contenders.

Well Rauch is out of Options. If they send him down he'd have to clear Waivers as does Ginter

I have no doubt that it will be Scott Schoenweiss. He's gonna make big strides and turn into a pretty good starter, imo. Something like a 4.59 ERA and innings which would be excellent in the 5 hole.

Cotts should get more time to work on his pitches. He's gonna be awesome, but I think a little more time is best.

As far as centerfield...I'm guessing Reed. All I know is this team needs to infuse themselves with speed. Center, ss, and 2nd are where they can do it and I will be ticked if they don't. If they decide to go with Reed in the 2 hole (And put pressure on him) then I could see them getting away with playing Willie in the 9 hole (This assumes that Reed is playing good...so a big If). Then you NEED to invest money in the leadoff slot so you know guys are getting ahead.

An alternative that would be awesome is getting the Marlins top of the order or like I've been pulling for Cabrerra-Castillo.

Problem is that's what we get from Garland in the 4 hole ;)

Garland will be between 3.8 and 4.09 this year.

Mark my words. Garland is getting more and more consistent every start and I know he's gonna do it. With those two in the back and a strong front three, I love our chances.

If I'm the Sox I'd just get a hands down kick butt bullpen and rotation and screw the offense. Just get guys that can do little things and piece it together. Keep some of teh guys we have. It doesn't even have to be pretty.

It would be really great if Joe Borchard was ready for CF. He took a few steps backward this year.

Garland is a .500 pitcher. No more, no less. If this team is serious about contending, when Goo walks, we deal for a one or two SP AND a three or four man in the rotation. Relegate JG to the number 5 spot where he belongs.

Hope I am wrong Jason, but I can't see it.

I'd say Maggs gets dealt for a good starting pitcher and a solid outfield prospect.

If you go with the Angels...you ask for Krod, Lackey and Erstad.

Erstad makes like 9 mil i think.

Erstad makes like 9 mil i think.

8 mill...which is why the Sox could get all three of these guys. Lackey steps into the rotation (Sox save 6 mill) and still get a very solid player that could play center and dh.

I'd want the Angels to pay part of his salary or take on Konerko's in the deal. They are looking for a DH.

I think that Loaiza, Buehrle, Colon or FA, Garland, and Marte would win us a world series ;). BTW by "Cut" I meant "walk"

Why do people keep saying to have Marte start? He's our stud reliever, and was very solid this year. We know he'll be back and can count on him. Leave him in the bullpen. Who would replace him in our pen?

I think the 5th starter will be Shoey. I think Rauch and Diaz will be waiting in the wings if a starter gets hurt or struggles. Cotts needs AT LEAST 1/2 a season in AAA to improve his control before the Sox even think about calling him up. The only other youngster that might get a shot is Pacheco, however, I believe he also needs AT LEAST 1/2 in AAA. Last year was his 1st solid year in the minors so I am a little skeptical about him, especially making the jump to the majors. If you are looking for a possible Loiaza on the FA market, than look no further then Wilson Alverez. He appears to be fully healthy and was one of the most dominating pitchers in the second half. He might be had for 1-2M/yr(maybe a little more) and I would love to see the Sox take a flyer on him.

The starting CF SHOULD AND WILL BE Rowand. He deserves another shot. I have a feeling that his injury affected his play early in the season, and he really turned it around in the second half. He is very solid defensively in CF, and certainly an upgrade over Everett or Borchard. All I want from my CF is a .750 OPS and solid D, and I really think Rowand can do that. He has a very respectible .743 career OPS in 500+ AB's(the equivalent to a full season). I am one of the biggest fans of Reed, but he needs a couple of months in AAA before coming to the majors. IF Rowand is struggling AND Reed is doing well at AAA, THAN give Reed a chance in CF, BUT not before. Borchard needs to show me that he can get his swing back and sustain sucess for an extended period of time, which means he needs 1/2 season at AAA before even thinking of calling him up. Everett is as good as gone, although I wouldn't mind the Sox trading Maggs for prospects and then resign Everett to play RF.

Why trade for Erstad? He had one career year and has done little since. I really think the Sox have their own Erstad in the form of Rowand. Erstad has only had 1 season in the last 5 when he posted an OPS better then .702(his career year in 2000). I really think you can get better offense from Rowand, and both are solid defensively using hussle and good jumps to make up for a lack of natural CF ability. I wont even get into Erstad's contract, because that is a joke. He might be one of the most overpaid players in the game, and the Sox cant afford to add biug salaries with little production. They have enough of their own(Konerko and Koch).

Garland will be between 3.8 and 4.09 this year.

I'd agree with you.....if JM were still our manager. JM had little to no confidence in Garland at times, causing him to have little to no confidence in himself at times.

I think if we have a manager that is confident in him, he will be much better. Killa, you were at the "game"(if you want to call it that) where Manuel took Garland out after 5....the next 2 or 3 starts were all s*** from Garland, and my guess is that him getting taken out early factored into him getting shelled.

A manager with a brain leaves Garland in during that game, we possibly win, and maybe our season doesn't go sour. Because of mistakes like that, we are not playing the Yankees.

As far as the 5th starter is concerned....make it someone who will put up respectable numbers. I don't want any of this 3 wins from our 5th starter spot bulls*** that we got all year long. I want someone who will win us a ballgame or two a month....and if we can get 8-12 wins out of the 5th starter spot, I will be ecstatic. And CFer....I got 1 word for you....Dorn.
