Mariners shut down Gregory Santos

Featured Replies

@Lip Man 1 and I were both expecting this to happen with our previous posts.  Santos had mysterious shoulder issues at the end of last season and the Sox pounced to trade him away.  I called it the Sirotka Part 2 trade, but with a good return (not an obese, drunk David Wells).  Getz definitely sold high on known damaged goods.  I have zero doubts now.  This is definitely Getz’s best trade to date and will be difficult to top, even with his eventual Cease trade.

Right-hander Gregory Santos, who the Mariners acquired from the White Sox to join Brash and Andres Munoz as late-inning leverage relievers, has also been shut down from throwing after feeling some discomfort in his teres major muscle, which runs lateral to the scapula in the back of his shoulder, after throwing a bullpen session.

I touched on this on a rather comprehensive review of the Mariners' offseason and the parallels to the White Sox.

Keith Law's opinion?  Poor due diligence by Mariners or chicanery by Sox?

Let's not forget at the time David Wells was a huge (literally and figuratively) get at a massive salary for the Sox and expected to lead a returning 2000 playoff team to greater heights.

But turned into another Lynn or Keuchel with us...of course he got hurt eventually when not fighting teammates and they recovered a good amount of insurance subsidies on that specific contract.

And then naturally this happened:

January 17, 2002 - After one injury plagued, controversial season with the Sox, pitcher David Wells signed a contract with the Yankees. Wells won only five games in 2001 for the team with 16 starts. Naturally he then turned around and won 61 games over the next four years with New York, San Diego and Boston. The White Sox did get some revenge against him in the 2005 A.L.D.S. as they beat him in game #2 of that series 5-4 when he was pitching for the Red Sox. The big blow was a three-run home run by Tadahito Iguchi
