Jim Callis with specific Janish comments on most of the Sox best prospects and a few others

Everyone but Braden…

“Jacob (Gonzalez) is in better shape this year,” Janish said. “He got beat up last year in his first full season. His DNA is more geared to contact than power, but he can learn when to take a shot at the plate. I was skeptical initially of whether he was a big league shortstop, but he knows what he can and can’t do and makes all the plays. He was the shortstop on the Double-A champions and he’s better than he gets credit for.”

Minor League bench guy.

Assuming you mean Gonzalez and not the White Sox director of player development lol...

As Paul Janish spent nearly 1000 games and 12 years in the minors.

Seems Janish a little skeptical of the decision to draft a SS that might not even profile there in the big leagues...coming from someone who grew up playing on the infield himself.

I like how a guy who is part of the collective that should be fired and cleared out by a new regime to get rid of the "losing stink" of the old, suddenly becomes a sage baseball evaluator when he casts doubt on anything the Sox did.

He was just hired in early November, 2023.

Gonzalez had just been drafted the summer prior.

At any rate...those are as skeptical/pragmatic comments as you'll ever see about a mid first round draft pick from his own farm director so quickly.

I'm betting we never see such commentary on Braden Montgomery in the future, for example...unless it's questioning whether can play CF as opposed to his more ideal and natural RF positioning.

I recall reading here that Haber was the one who burst in and demanded they pick Gonzo. Burst in might be strong, but the head of amateur scouting didn't make that pick.

I agree with you that it's pretty noteworthy that Janish said that. Throwing shade on Haber, maybe. James Fox has said that with Teel off the board, Arjun Nimmala was Shirley's next choice.

He's currently a fringeish Top 85-100 guy with Toronto.

Was reading this in the minor league section as well but closed...seems they are QUITE aware of the limitations of both Baldwin and Meidroth.
