Most controversial MVPs

Featured Replies

I don't think this was posted, but it's interesting..since the MVPs were handed out...

the first one is interesting..Pudge winning over Pedro in '99...I know 80% of people never want to give a MVP award to a pitcher, but Pedro deserved it..

Could an argument be made in this years winners? Bonds and Pujols

But I still think you couldn't have gone wrong with either...any others you guys could think of in baseball?

and ignore the football and B-ball MVP most controversial MVPS :D

The Hawk had an amazing year when he won it, but I'm sure its controversial since he was on a last place team.

ESPN once again misses the Point the MVP is not the best Numbers but it's what you mean to your team....

1988 NL MVP was Kirk Gibson over Darryl Strawberry who had the best #'s but Gibson meant a lot to the Dodgers Winning it all.

As the 1995 mvp went to Barry Larkin

That's why Pedro should have won in '99

He was soooooooo important to his team..even if he only played every 4 or 5 days

That article was a pretty good read. Thanks Gash.

You can't define what the MVP "is". It varies from voter to voter, year to year, depending on the set of circumstances that occur in each case. To say that the MVP should be this or that is fine, but it's only your opinion. Everybody looks at it differently. That's why they have voters to determine this.

I would have to go with Mo Vaughn vs Albert Belle as the one that sticks out in my mind from recent years.

Belle put up great numbers in a strike shortened season in 1995

.317 50 HOMERS and 126 rbis and a 1.091 OPS in only 143 games

and his Indians won 100 games that short year.

But he was...and as an asshole.

The writers went with, at the time mind you, a fan friendly choice of Mo Vaughn.

Who also put up great numbers

.300 39 homers and also 126 rbis and a .963 OPS in 140 games

A controversial MVP was 2000. That one was kind of like this year's NL MVP though....you really couldn't go wrong.

I still thought Frank should have won though.

The 1995 AL MVP award was the writers just basically purposely shunning Albert Belle because he was an asshole.

The writers tried to "send a message." The message - "Kiss our asses and we'll make you happy."

Barry Bonds was a complete tool and jerkoff of major proportions his whole career, but all of a sudden, he's been "cordial" the last few years. He's not stupid - he knows what straws stir the drink.
