RIP Lee Elia

Featured Replies

Former White Sox player who also played for and managed the Cubs has died at age 87. I remember him in his only year with the Sox which was 1966 but he will be famously remembered for his classic rant against Cub fans in 1983. May he rest in peace.

That sucks man. RIP to a legend.

RIP Lee. Once or twice a decade, somebody says what they really feel. You've got to enjoy it when they do.

No one will ever top his rant.  So many classic lines.

First cub manager I remember, I remember when he bumped an ump, then flicked him off.  Or maybe those were 2 separate instances.

I was cub fan that 83 season, even cried when Reds hit a granny against them, which got me in trouble.  That's right, I got yelled at for taking baseball too seriously, then my sis thought it was so hilarious, she invited a friend over to join in at laughing at my "pain".

RIP to a real one, him and Torborg are now gone.  Popeye too.  We still have Frey, Tony, Fregosi, Gene Michael, Jim Essian, Gene Lamont, Bevington and Treblehorn.  The good ol days.

85% of the people work, the other 15% come here. It’s a playground for those ***********. He actually was pretty accurate in his assessment. A friend of mine was friends with the guys that used to do the Shawn-o-meter, tracking Shawn Dunstons batting average. Then one day it disappeared. They got jobs.

RIP. That rant made people laugh for over 40 years. I still giggle when I hear it.

Was the Meter stored in the ballpark, or did they have to bring it everyday

They were fast to compute his new avg every time he got a hit.  Did they dial it up during the at bat just in case he'd get a hit, then dial it back down in case he got out

I remember reading somewhere that Lee and his wife listened to his rant years later and they both laughed about it. She was asking him how did he come up with the things he said.
