Caple Column on Sox Scout

Wow that's a great article, really puts things into perspective for ya, shows ya what's important in life.

"Scouts are the hardest working, least recognized people in baseball. They'll drive hundreds of miles in a day and thousands of miles in a week on the chance that the high school kid they heard about really has a 90-mph fastball. They're away from home for days at a time, staying in cheap motels in small towns across the country. They aren't paid enough and don't receive enough recognition. General managers, owners, umpires, broadcasters, even writers, have their place in the Hall of Fame, but not scouts."

Who'd want to be a scout?

Unbelievable story.

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Wow, what a story. Wish him and his family the best. It really puts things in perspective. Sometimes people forget that baseball is just a game, its something you play to get away from your problems if you have any and just have fun.

Also, Happy Thanksgiving everyone :)

And Greg, your gonna be busy all year cause it looks like the Jayhawks are gonna be better then usual, well if yesterdays game against MSU was any indication. Wow did they look good.

John Kazanas is an amazing man. I have known him for 4 years now when he first scouted me at the University of Oklahoma. He has always been a very honest man who always told me like it was. He also is one of the most generous people I have ever met. He is always sending me encouraging and uplifting letters telling me to "keep me nose clean". I am one of those players that organizations consider "long shots" because of my age and injuries, but John has always believed in me when others haven't and for that I have always been grateful. I mean seriously, what other scout keeps in contact with former players that they have drafted. I can't think of one! Their are just too many players to keep track of. But he always has...just amazing!

It just blows my mind to think that this individual has had to deal with the death of his wife, while at the same time continuing his job as a scout for the Sox. I have the utmost respect for John and I just wanted to share with all of the White Sox fans out there that this organization does have a lot of quality individuals working for them, that actually are "real people" and the majority of the time they don't get any credit for the things that they do. John is one of those men.

Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless the Kazanas family.

Keep up the good work on the site!!! J.B.

Good of you to share your experiences with him, and good luck to you. Here's hoping you have a great year.

Thanks for the story. Having you guys as posting members is what makes this site incredible. We have first hand info of angles of the game of baseball that you will never see on TV or hear on the radio. It really makes the depth of the game, so much more so.

It is great to read players posts!

Chisoxfan ... Good point. It looks like Self has the team rolling, though

the fifth starter broke his collarbone today.

Self is a breath of fresh air though, very friendly, nice, approachable, in

many ways different from the ex coach.

I hope all scouts have a happy tgiving.
