Perez up, Booser down, Shuster out

Frankly, I'm surprised that Shuster made it this long.

Every guy the Sox got back in the Bummer trade other than Gowens was DFA worthy at the time.

But Get "rehabilitated" Siroka for the Nats/Cubs.

yeah, could've taken Nasim Nunez in R5 that year and he would've given you 3 times as much production (0.6 bWAR vs 0.2 lol) as Nicky Lopez for 1/5 the cost. Not like it matters,  neither guy is a difference maker and it isn't my money. I liked Deyvison de los Santos in R5 but he's also proven to be not very good. Basically Tim Elko. Might still be worth having in the system vs...Shane Drohan...who is not in the system and has actually produced for AAA Worcester this season.

Figured Shewmake and Shuster might've been better. Bummer of a trade. Gowens is a Libertyville and U of I guy though so hopefully he can do something in Chicago. I'm not holding my breath.

Soroka was a good bullpen arm, Nicky Lopez provided good clubhouse presence to a team plagued with insane bad PR in that department. Bummer sucked, everyone acquired was cheap. None of this makes sense outside of the "Getz suckz" echo chamber.

Anthropolis (a good, rare GM who wasn't trying to put one over on Getz)  told Getz that he was going to waive/DFA most of those guys.  Getz did it for Soroka; it was worth a shot  - he just took a little longer than expected.  Getz also got a prospect out of that deal.
Sharp contrast to his recent efforts..

But Boozer is pitching well, and he's controllable,  so why is he being sent down?  He needs to be moved in the offseason and this doesn't help.

Huh?  How do you know this?  Are we just making stuff up to defend Getz now?

A better player would have provided more hope for the clubhouse than crappy Little Nicky.

Bummer is still pretty good. 109 ERA+ with Atlanta. His FIP is better than his ERA. He throws a bunch of different pitches. He'll get another contract. All those guys were, ya know, baseball players. It wasn't a good trade. I like Naperville Nicky, seems like a nice dude, I like local players and any player named Nick or Nicky or Nico. His dad in the booth was fun.

That trade and the Mena trade seem like they were based on old information. Or Barfield's opinion. Doesn't really reflect on my opinion of Getz, didn't really make a difference, but it wasn't a good trade, ATL got the better end of it for sure considering Bummer is playing and producing. Negative WAR, I guess, but his ERA is above average.

Seemed like they just wanted guys to fill out the roster but could've done it via other avenues. Ultimately, who cares.

I think you nailed it here.  This was the entire strategy.  Just fill a bunch of roster spots / positions in the cheapest possible manner.

Two potential starters in Soroka and Shuster.

A starting 2B in Little Nicky.

A utility infielder in Shewmake.

A pitching prospect in Gowens.

More is not always better, especially when the majority of the return is garbage.  Getz was like a little kid shopping for cheap Chinese toys at the dollar store.  He would have been much better served going the all prospect route in the trade.

Sure, I'll buy this. They ended up cleaning house halfway through that season, and we're not tapping into Arizona's cache based on Barfield's word any more, so maybe they've moved on.

The Bummer trade was quantity for a guy who sucked (at the time). Mena - Fletcher - looked promising. It wasn't. I hope somebody starts a thread about lottery tickets that didn't win. I will so rule in that thread!!

Most people didn’t like the Mena trade at the time and were even more pissed off when his velocity was higher then anticipated

Sure. Mena isn't a whole lot more than he could have been. He wasn't killing this year at AAA, and he hasn't pitched since the middle of June. Maybe he would be getting shuttled back and forth with Cannon and Gomez, right now.

He still has youth and time.  He’s only 22.  That is much better than what a soon to be 28-year old and now apparently career minor league outfielder is going to do for the Sox.

Sure...maybe somebody will sew a gorilla into his chest. He has about 10 years for it to take. LOL.
