Imanaga, Torres and Grisham I can see taking it.

Now is the year for Grisham to lock in long-term for 3+ years....hasn't had an offensive year like this in ages and he's at the ideal stage in his career to max out.

Imanaga likely to renegotiate for another 2-3 year deal.  Especially with Steele out until mid season.  Plus they can leverage him and Suzuki to add another NPB player such as Imai.

18. Trent Grisham, CF: four years, $66MM

Tim: Angels  / Anthony: Rays  / Darragh: Angels / Steve: Astros

In the course of a single season, Trent Grisham shifted his appeal from his glove to his bat.  That transformation is going to make him a lot more money than anyone could’ve anticipated in spring training.

Very similar to Benintendi long-term deal in terms of AAV.

With no track record though, I don’t think he gets it. I can see him gambling on 1 year/$22M and having no draft pick attached in a year.

Angels are going trade Adell and/or Ward and have plenty of money to spend still.

When most of the Top 15 names are off the board or accounted for already, someone in that second tier of teams/payrolls will blink.

Would we consider being Lucas back?

Not after he became the union rep and then JR tried to screw him over a pittance...he's most likely to end up somewhere closer to his California roots.  Maybe the Orioles, though.

He pitcher well enough this season to get at least $15-18 million if not $20 on the open market.

I don't think Imanaga exercises his opt out option if he plans to take the QO.

The other two guys, I'm surprised they were even offered it. $22mil is a lot for them. And it scares other teams away. DET will pay Gleyber $22mil but not extend Skubal? Interesting.

The QO is $7M more. Also wasn’t good the second half.

I thought the Cubs turned down the option. I've seen it spelled out (maybe even here, somewhere) that the Cubs would give a QO, Imanaga takes it, then he can pitch in Japan if the lockout goes longer than expected.

But it voided the following two years at $20.5mil and $17.2m. That's a decent amount of money to leave on the table (plus the $15.5mil this next year). However, Eddy is right but I thought it was a player option. Cheap ass team anticipating a lockout. Worse ownership than the south side, let's be honest.

You’re understanding incorrect. Cubs declined the 3 year option which gave Imanaga a $15M player option for 2026. He didn’t opt out of 3/57M. The Cubs did.

This. Cubs declined the 3 year option turning into 1 year player option for Imanaga. He can take 1 year QO.

No...he opted out when they refused to add another (fifth) year to the original deal, so he declined his $15 million option player option for 2026.

Unique contract structure.

That's what I said. He potentially had a 5 year deal

Not when he declined the Player Option though. It was only 1 year/$15M. So the QO now gives him a possible 1 year/$22M

Actually, here's an article that lays out the labyrinthine options of the Imanaga contract -

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/shota-imanaga-has-the-chance-to-do-the-funniest-thing-ever/

"When you combine the two player options, by leaving, Imanaga is turning down a guaranteed two years and $25.925 million in the belief that he can get a better deal in free agency. He’s probably right!"
