This Day In Sox History 2/27...

Featured Replies

February 27, 1973 - Coming off of his 1972 M.V.P. season, Dick Allen signed a three-year, 750,000 contract with the White Sox, making him the highest-paid player in baseball. While contract details for early baseball are sketchy, this is believed to be the first time a White Sox player had been the highest-paid in the game. Allen earned his deal by leading the A.L. in homers (37), RBIs (113), on-base percentage (.420), slugging percentage (.603) and OPS (1.023).

It would be 24 years before the White Sox would boast the highest-paid player in the game again, when Albert Belle signed a deal that paid him 11 million for the 1997 season.

Funny I already knew it was Belle but I had no idea Allen was the original highest paid.

We didn't get a 2/26 thread so i'll just post this here

Haha, I so remember this interview.  “That man has tried my patience…”

”He better stay out of White Sox business!”

Kenny was such a clown.

KW was many things but clown is not one of them. He was upset and got emotional but the man brought us the only WS we've ever seen on the South Side. That's not clown s%*#.

It can be both.  Obviously he did a great job with 2005 but shitting on the greatest player in franchise history publicly because of his ego was an embarrassment.

KW contributed a lot toward this team leading up to the 2005 championship, but I'm so relieved that he's gone.   As far as throwing former players under the bus who aren't total loyalists after they're gone, seems like par for the course for this team under Jerry Reinsdorf

It's funny people are mad, because this crap is still happening.

We all know that KW has too much of a temper and ego for this own good.  But yeah, I mean it was only a few weeks ago that we were discussing the Sox vs. Thomas spat over their Black History month statement and KW has been gone for several years now.   This organization simply does not tolerate former players who don't kiss the ring and it all comes down to the person in the organization who just became a nonagenarian.

Carlton Fisk, Jack McDowell and A.J. immediately come to mind.
