Solid catcher.

10-12 Hr's each year, young, 260 hitter. Not bad but not a play maker.

is he any good?

At one time he was pretty highly regarded, but he sucked so bad last year he lost his job to Brian Schneider. I believe he was touted as a good-hit average-fielding catcher, that turned into weak-hitting, defensively-challenged catcher.

Cubs can have him, but what did they give up for him?

player to be named

Cubs trade for Barrett

The Cubs today acquired catcher Michael Barrett from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later.

Oakland acquired Barrett in a trade with Montreal on Monday.

The 27-year-old Barrett has spent six seasons in the majors--all with the Expos. He has a career batting average of .253 with 38 homers and 193 RBIs. His career fielding percentage is .991 in 399 games.

Barrett hit .208 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 2003, but spent much of the season on the disabled list after injuring his hip in July. While making a rehab appearance, he fractured his left index finger and didn't return until September 10.

The Expos selected Barrett with the 28th overall pick in the 1995 draft. He was originally drafted as a shortstop but was converted to a catcher. He had his best season in 2002, when he hit .263 with 12 homers, 49 RBIs and 20 doubles.

didn't barrett hit for the cycle last year, or was it 3 homers? i know it was something big.

Score is reporting that player to be named is likely to be Damian Miller.

For what it's worth.

wonder if that takes the Cubs outta the I-Rod sweepstakes.

hope so

Actually, I think Damian Miller is a solid player. A bit lite with the stick, but he's a decent catcher.

Cub pitchers really liked throwing to him. I would be glad to see him gone.

I like Barret more then Damian Miller...good move for the Cubs.

Wilkerson from the 'spos hit for the cycle last year. I'm not sure if Barrett did. Yeah he was a young hot catcher a couple years back but things really quieted down about him last couple seasons.

It was a cycle. But I think Brad Wilkerson did it, not Barret. But it was definitely a cycle by an Expos player.

If it is Damien Miller that goes the other way, the Cubs might actually sign I Rod, because they needed to clear Damien's salary to have a shot at IRod

michael barrett is a very solid catcher i like him. now he sucks because he's a flub. they are going to be very goodthis year it makes me sick :fthecubs

Cubs are going to try and sign him for a year and avoid arbitration, then ship Miller to A's

Logically I don't see this taking them out of the Lopez/I-Rod bidding because they have Bako and Barrett right now, which is either equal or even a step down from Bako/Miller.

Only way this is actually the answer to their catcher situation is the Colon deal screwed the Cubs attempts to re-sign Wood at a reasonable rate and they're getting ready to bend over for that extension, because if Colon is worth 13m a year I'm sure Wood and his agent are asking for 13-15m

Barrett had an Off year last year hitting in the .200 range. Barrett is a Good Catcher and can play some 3rd Base like he did his first year. Good trade for the Cubs a change in sceanery could help him

If the Cubs can sign Barrett, they will still be in the IRod/Javey sweepstakes. They'll non-tender Bako and keep Barrett as a backup C-1B-3B.

yea, but you know what; so are the cards and the stros....the cubs better not take the division lightly this year, both cards and stros have loaded up on pitching, and if clemens comes back..watch out :fthecubs

Something will happen to keep the Cubs out of the Series. It may be Armegeddon, but something will prevent it.
