D.C. Council Bans Cell Phones While Driving

Featured Replies

WASHINGTON -- Anyone wanting to talk on a cell phone while driving through the nation's capital better have a hands-free device soon.

The D.C. City Council Tuesday afternoon gave final approval to a bill making it illegal to use a hand-held cell phone while behind the wheel. There will be exceptions for emergencies.

Ward One Councilman Jim Graham was the lone dissenter. Graham has expressed concern about using police resources to enforce the law.

The measure now goes to Mayor Tony Williams, who has indicated he will sign it. Assuming he does, enforcement would likely begin in July. Violators would face $100 tickets.

New York has banned use of hand-held cell phones while driving since 2001, when it became the first state to do so.

Officer, I'm not talking - I'm listening. It's my wife ;)

Cops hav been pullin ppl ova down here for drivin and usin their mobile at da same time, but ppl still do it.

I think that police brutality should be ENCOURAGED against people who yap on their f***in' cell phones while they're driving.

Put. The. Phone. Down. AND. DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. As long as I can keep using my laptop PC while driving, I have no problem with what you said.

THEY already have that in NY, but hardly no one follows it

I don't know how many times I've either had to swerve to avoid someone not paying attention because they are engrossed in their phone conversation or had to maneuver to get around someone doing about 30 on the expressway because they are too busy with their damn phone.

This is wrong on so many levels. Where's it stop? What's next? No eating and driving. No smoking and driving. No listening to the radio and driving. No talking and driving. This isn't the end, it's the start.

They should just make cars with the damn hands free device to begin with.

I could live without eating while driving and smoking while driving ( easy since I don't smoke ), but people pay so little attention to anything these days that ANY additional distractions are very dangerous.

Ageed, but should that be LAW?

no reading the newspaper while driving, no putting on make up while driving, no shaving while driving, no sex while driving . . .

When I used to drive a truck I saw a guy pass me that was doing a crossword puzzle.

The problem is it is causing so many accidents that everyone insurance premiums are affected. In other words you and I are paying because of idiots wrecking their cars doing stupid s*** like this. Remember "the right to swing your arms ends at anothers nose."

Some people should just be banned from driving, period! <_>

Good point, but when did we make it against the law to be an idiot?

Anytime when it involves other peoples money. As long as they only hurt themselves, no one cares... except for making good reality TV.

Like assisted suicide?

Yes, because there are so many f***tards who won't be deterred by telling them "it's the right thing to do".

The best thing would be some sort of signal blocker that takes effect when the car is out of park. You can use it if you're in park, but shift out of park and you can't talk.
