February 20, 200422 yr Is it good or bad we play the Yanks 7 times right off the bat? This early in the year we figure to go at least 3-4 instead of 0-7 in the hot summer months, don't we? And we play the Royals early again. Does it matter how we do coming out of the gate? Do we have to hang near .500 lest we draw 10,000 the rest of our games? What do you think? Is our tough early schedule a factor in our ultimate success or failure??

If the Sox start out hot, and gain say 4-6 games on Minny, KC and the rest in April, and gain two more the next two months, we could realistically put the division away by the All-Star break. Unfortunately, this also applies for Minny and KC, hell, even Cleveland and Detroit too.
February 21, 200422 yr Last year, Minnesota had this same situation and they went 0-7 against the Yankmes, yet still won the division. With that said, I feel it is HUGE for the Sox to get off to a good start. That would instill some hope in the casual fan. Maybe some of them will actually attend a few games. Increased attendance would make it easier for KW to justify adding some mid-season pickups to help hold off the Twins and Royals.

We will be lucky to draw 1.4 million, seriously, and a big chunk of that will come from the 3-game series against the Scrubs. This franchise is truly in a world of hurt right now, especially fan-wise. I just wish that the greedy fu :dips*** :fyou
February 21, 200422 yr most of the time it would be considered a good thing to get your games against a powerhouse like the yanks out of the way early...but since winning early on and attendance are tied together this year more than most it might be a bad thing... we go 7-0 against the yanks and its a great thing we go 0-7 and might as well make plans for bears camp in july

I can't remember the last time a Sox team dug themselves a hole and THEN climbed back out of it. If they don't do well early, they just don't seem to do well at all. And I think it's a good thing that the Sox have early challenges - I think it'll give an indication of the makeup of the team and it SHOULD make sure that the team comes out focused and ready to perform. Last year's start was supposed to be fairly easy, with a bunch of KC ( and I believe, Detroit ) games early, and we saw how that turned out.

February 21, 200422 yr Ok, a little breakdown on starts for the first month of season: @KC 1,2 @NY 3,4,1,5 KC 2,3,1 @TB 4,5,2 NY 1,3,4 TB 2,5,1 CLE 3,2 TOR 4,1,3 That's maximizing the starts for 1 and 2 while keeping them on normal rest. I really like how from @TB to TOR goes matchup wise. We have a good chance at a big homestand there.

I just wish that the greedy fu :dips*** :fyou A 4-2 or better opening road trip could really get the excitement going heading into opening day, we also have a big homestand in late April that while it might be an intitial drain on attendance it could also pay big dividends down the road with a great performance.

February 21, 200422 yr This team better play with some f***ing heart on the road. That's been probably the thing I hated the most about the Manuel-era Sox teams. Pitchers give up HRs and act like they don't care. Homeruns get called foul in Baltimore and no one seems to care. People get BS check-swing strike 3 calls in Detroit and don't care. It sounds like these young guys are gonna be pushing real hard this year and with a young manager like Ozzie, hopefully these problems are things of the past.

Opening day will be a sellout before we play game one, it's the Yankee series that'll be effected by our start. If we're 7-5 or 8-4 with the Yanks heading into town those could be some huge weekday attendances for April and it could spill over to the TB weekend series too if we win 2 of 3 from the Yanks here. In fact, with an 8-4 start, Pepsi half priced night, and a little luck with the weather the Tuesday series opener could be a near sellout.
