Sidney Ponson

The Orioles are concerned about Ponson's weight and are beginning to question the decsion to give him a three-year $22.5 million contract in the offseason, the Washington Post reports.

On Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the Orioles came home following a three-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees, the team's front office called together members of the medical and strength-and-conditioning staffs to discuss Ponson. The right-hander, 27, is 3-6 with a 6.48 ERA, the second-worst ERA among American League starters two months into the season. A team source said owner Peter Angelos "has been on the warpath" in discussions with the front office in recent days regarding Ponson.

Anyone else glad the Sox didn't sign this guy?

I know Brando is, with Colon too.

Either Colon or Ponson is still a HELLUVA lot better than anyone we have as a 5th starter!!!

Would you pay over $7 million for a 5th starter though. ;)

It's not my money!!!

Wow. How ignorant is that? Comments like that is why sports is in so much trouble now. You know what? It IS your money, if you go to the park at all, tune in to baseball games on tv, or listen to the radio. All of these actions lead to money being exchanged on behalf of the players, and just like any well ran company, would you want them to waste that kind of money when they could pay 10% of that and get the same results?

You have to think that is IS your money. We are all playing GM/Owner on here and giving our opinions, so you have to use reality as a guideline...

That's wrong!

In the case of the Sox, JR and his investors don't/won't put more money into the team. The more attendance they get, the more profit they make!

It's not like they took the money they offered Colon and/or the money they were "going to" offer Ponson and spent it on other players, is it?

We lost Colon, Sullivan, Everett, Gordon, Alomar, Graffinino, etc., and replaced them with NOTHING!!!

So you know what the books look like? Interesting

Plus, where would money for Garcia or another trade come from if we had spent it on Ponson?

That's wrong!

When did the majority of these players arrive? Last season before the trade deadline, when the Sox WENT AND SPENT MONEY to try to win the division. It didn't work, and they parted ways.

Believe me when I say, I'm not a fan of JR, but, they did go out and try to put together the pieces last year, and frankly I would rather be in the position they are in today, having the money available to go get pieces they need then spending a bunch on free agency at the beginning of the year and not being able to go get crap now.

(Woah, it's scary playing MMQB because I didn't think so at the beginning of the year...)

And look at how well those players are performing so far this year. We really miss them!

You know where that money went?

To pay Maggs, Caballo, Konerko, Thomas, Valentin, Buehrle, Loaiza, and all the others with big contracts. Had we resigned Colon to the 3-year, $36 mill deal that we offered him, we probably wouldn't have Maggs or Caballo.

Good point!

Gordon is having a good year. Graffanino was having a good year before he got hurt. Everybody else pretty much stinks.

Hu...? That money was already committed. The $4 to sign Colon would have been over and above the already budgeted money. Maggs and Carlos would have been here regardless.

I saw an article a while back where KW was quoted as saying if the Sox had Colon they wouldn't of been able to afford Maggs. Don't know if he was just posturing to make the loss not sound as bad.

Hmm, Grafanino or Uribe? Hmm, Shingo or Gordon? I think we know the answers to both those questions. Plus we just got Giovanny Gonzalez for letting Tom Gordon go.

So you are saying we miss these guys or that those guys are performing well?

I believe he's referring to this year..? Maggs and Carlos were already committed to this year, as was their salaries. I'm pretty sure Kenny was talking about next year.
