White Sox: Committee will close

Manager Ozzie Guillen's new approach to closing out late leads will be to go with his gut and play the matchups as he sees them on a day-to-day basis. "When Koch gets back on track he's going to be in the closing role, but right now we're going to go with anyone,'' Guillen tolf the Chicago Sun-Times. "We're going to look at the matchups in the ninth. It could be [Damaso] Marte, it could be [shingo] Takatsu, it could be [Mike] Jackson, or it could be [billy] Koch." Of course, in the first opportunity for Guillen to test his new strategy, it was none of the above. Last night, right-hander Cliff Politte notched his first save of the season against the Phillies.

We're not putting too much stock into last night's results for several reasons. First, the Sox were up 14-8 in the eighth and it didn't evolve as a traditional save situation. Second, Politte struggled in the closer's role last season in Toronto. Guillen had Takatsu and Marte warming in the pen with Politte in the game and suggested he would have played the matchup game if someone had reached. We still believe at some point Takatsu will have to get a look. Not only is he the career leader in Japan in saves, but he's also been the most consistent and reliable pitcher in the Sox pen this season. Stay tuned.

As long as he doesn't use Koch.

If that happens, I'll be sick to my gut.

There's got to be a way to get rid of Koch... :puke

I'd prefer Shingo. But f*** it. As long as it's not, Botch. Although, if Botch proves over time he can get the job done I would be all for giving him back the closers job. And yes. I know i'm dreaming :crying

not a fan of this, but won't bash ozzie until this blows up in his face.

I'm not sure if I like this or not...

This is better than Botch, but closer by committee does not work.

I agree, But I think this will evolve into a "let the cream rise to the top" situation. I'm betting when it's all said and done, barring trades, that Shingo will earn the closer's job.
