Bruce Levine is reporting that the Cubs are talking about acquiring Nomar Garciaparra. This was on a sportscenter update at 2 on espn1000. No names were mentioned, however

Nomar is one of my fav players but he was wayyy overhyped in Boston. I wonder if Hendry wants him as a rental or will they sign him long term.

I'm sure they would try to sign him long term if they bring him over; however, I wonder if Nomar would be interested in staying there or if he's still set on going to the West Coast since he won't be in Boston.

I wonder what the Cubs would have to give up. I highly doubt the Red Sox are going to want prospects. The Cubs will have to give up some serious pitching.

Honestly, when have the Cubs ever traded for an all-star the caliber of a Nomar during midseason? Fred McGriff at age 38?

 

It ain't gonna happen, but if it does, they would probably trade Clement and have just as big a stopgap at the #5 spot in the rotation as we did (or still do really with Scotty).

 

Then again, Rusch did pitch the game of his life against us. I'd laugh if that was why they make the trade.

Not saying this story is wrong by any means, but WSCR, the other sports station in Chicago, is not even mentioning this proposed trade.

 

What it COULD be is Levine is in Houston for the All-Star game and the Cubs and Red Sox are have preliminary discussions and they are stressing the story to keep listeners hanging around (Again, not to say this trade won't happen, because I think it could make sense for both teams.)

 

I would think that the Red Sox would need an impact player, probably Clement. They are 6 out in the East and either in the Wild Card lead or within a game or two. I would think they would not just trade him for prospects unless they have a deal to get Cabrerra. Also Hendry could be using this as leverage against the Expos to pull the trigger on a Cabrerra to Cubs trade. (Similar to how people say KW used the Atlanta rumors to push Seattle to make the Garcia trade)

 

Dan Patrick just had Schilling on and nothing was mentioned about it, also the "National" Sportscenter isn't mentioning the rumor.

 

Edit: Just listened to the 2:20 update on AM 1000, now they're using words like "the teams are in discussions." Not using words like "close" or the ilk.

I don't think Schilling would know about it or be at liberty to say anything about it, really

 

I'm just telling you what i heard on espn, what bruce levine said. I guess they are talking now about a deal. Who knows how close it is to happening.

A package of a Clement/AGon/Leicester/Guzman. Leicester pitched pretty good in relief while he was up. I'll take Jose and his shortstop leading 18 homers as well as his clutch ability and leadership.

The cubs are NOT getting Nomar.

 

Why would Boston trade him for Clement, when the could get Odalis Perez and 2 prospects from LA (where Nomar wants to go!)?

How do you know LA wants to do that trade this season?

 

Dont be so closed minded about Nomar going to the Cubs. IT COULD happen.

No, it's perfectly fine. I just threw it out there to start up conversation about a possible deal, that's all. Instead of just making up rumors (i hate that), once i heard 'official' word talks were happening i figured that would make it 100 times more likely to happen than just fans WANTING it to happen.

the way you hear mike o golnik give his sportscenter update sounds like its a done deal. last week i wrote email for the critics at extra large segmnet on mjh and i slammed o golnik for not being a journolist,a broadcaster, and for telling sox fans to shove it a few ago when he was hosting a sunday night show a couple weeks ago. so dont listen to anything this moron has to say.

Unless the Angels are now calling themselves the LA Angels, the Dodgers are still in the NL West, not the AL West.

I think a Cabrera deal would be a better deal. I doubt they would have to give up a Guzman for him.

Maybe with Wood pitching again, the Cubs are now wanting to move Clement over the AS Break, so the team starts with a rotation of:

 

Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Rusch, Maddux

 

If I was the Cubs, I would not trade Clement, but thats just me.

Nomar is a career .337 at home and .308 on the road, so not terrible.
