Thai man dies of bird flu after sucking rooster bl

Featured Replies

from cbc news

BANGKOK - An 18-year-old Thai man who sucked the blood out of roosters injured in cockfights is the first human casualty of bird flu since the disease made a comeback in Asia in July.

Health ministry tests confirmed that the man's death in the Prachinburi province of Thailand was caused by the H5N1 bird flu virus.

A Public Health Ministry spokesperson said the practice of sucking out the fluids of roosters injured during fighting is a common practice in the sport.

An official with the World Health Organization said it was only a matter of time before a human became infected because the virus has been circulating in the birds.

Nine people in Thailand and a total of 28 people in Asia have died from the bird flu this year

Three people in Vietnam died when the disease re-emerged in July.

Authorities were forced to kill tens of millions of birds after the first outbreak in January.

Nearly 300,000 birds have been slaughtered since early July in Thailand.
