Jermaine Dye

Found this in Phil Rogers' latest piece.

It's too early to say who will replace Ordonez after, as expected, the White Sox declined to offer him salary arbitration by Tuesday's deadline. The leading candidate appears to be Jermaine Dye, whom Texas and San Francisco also are pursuing.

Robert Bry, Dye's agent, did not return a phone call Tuesday night. But a major-league source said the Sox are discussing a multiyear deal—possibly even three years—which could give them an edge over the other bidders.

Dye, 30, hit .265 with 23 homers and 80 RBIs for Oakland last season. Because he hits right-handed and has lost much of his speed to injuries, Dye would not seem to be a step in the direction of better balance and speed. He is an excellent right fielder, maybe a tick better than Ordonez, but right has hardly been a concern for the Sox's defense.

If the Sox are going to sign Dye—and something could happen soon with Oakland not offering arbitration—it could mean they are serious about trading Konerko or Lee for pitching or an upgrade at catcher. That would open up some at-bats for the switch-hitting Carl Everett and Ross Gload, a left-handed hitter.

Pure White Sox.

Outbid your competitors on a oft-injured player with the potential of replacing Magglio's production.

We'll probably be "close" to signing him until SanFranciso or Texas offers Dye a last second contract.

/someone was bound to say it

Somewone was bound to say this too ...... STFU

In that single post, you b****ed about both losing and signing Dye.

Talk about an unwarranted personal attack.

YASNY, including the reference of losing Dye is simply a observation of past FA's (Wright/Vizquel) signing with other clubs following reports both were close to signing with the White sox,

Mods, take note I'm attempting to resolve this issue in a civil manner. No need to close this thread. Obvioulsy one of us can hold our temper.

You may strongly hold your beliefs in regards to Williams inactivity this offseason, but I do as well. If you feel burdoned with reading my posts bashing Williams; avoid them. Because I'll assure you of one thing: until a move is created to improve this ballclub, the complaining will only continue.

You did, however, criticize both out possible comes. And with the lynch KW mentality going after he wisely decided against overpaying Jaret Wright, I don't see anything unwarrented other than the accusation of a "personal attack". I mean if STFU gets under your skin, I suggest you get a thicker skin.

The same old complaining and moaning everone has heard 1000 times should be reason alone for closing a thread. Certainly not a post that points this out

Thank you. Have you read the thread about Jaret Wright signing? Total b****fest. Yet, have the people b****ing about KW not signing him, would be b****ing about overpaying if he had signed Wright. Which is exactly what I pointed out in Flash's post about Dye.

Ah, the folly of youth!!!

I just got past the first few pages. Same old same old. Wright at $6 mill a yr for 3 yrs was a stretch. Not with his past injuries, it wasn't worth it

I do think your friend Finley would look better than Dye. Give him 2 yrs, move Rowand to RF. Dye doesn't do it for me. Esp. as Finley won't cost a pick [the sox do pride themselves on not losing a pick :D ] Note: that's lesson to all lurking moaners. How to criticize the sox w/o whining.

Frankly if you could get Finley for a couple of years instead of locking down into a 3 year deal with Dye, the Sox should certainly look into that. It all depends on how much money they are offering Dye though which we do not currently know.

Dye would almost certainly get $5 mill a yr. I'd rather pay Finley the $16 mill over 2 yrs [that Det. supposedly offered] than pay Dye $15 mill + over 3 yrs.

I suppose it would all depend on what you could do with the extra $3 million we'd save by signing Dye instead of Finley in that scenario. We could probably get an infielder or another guy for the bullpen.

But by the time Finley's contract is up Anderson and/ or Sweeney should be ready. Dye would likely be dead weight in his 3rd yr, keeping young [and cheap] guys from playing.

Also found this on Richard Hidalgo;

The Rangers and White Sox expressed interest in Hidalgo, but Texas wasn't looking to break the $252 million barrier the club set with A-Rod. Similarly, White Sox GM Ken Williams had his own reservations about Hidalgo, whom he deems a cheaper alternative to Magglio Ordonez.

Both teams were thinking in the one-year range, according to an industry source. Texas didn't want to offer more than $3.5 million, the source said.

Greenberg and his client are considering a short-term deal that would reestablish Hidalgo's market value for next winter. Hidalgo's groin has been bothering him for the past two seasons.

"He's going to work hard, lose some weight and get that groin healthy," Greenberg said. "It might be best for a one-year deal."

Agree, and nicely done by the way. :cheers

I would definately rather gamble on Hidalgo vs Dye.  Dye's health scares me a lot more than Hidalgo's.  Hidalgos upside is also way bigger.

Agree.

Hidalgo has some personal baggage too, the Sox should really check the whole thing out carefully.

That said, all factors being equal I'm in favor of Hidalgo over Dye.

As long as Hidalgo is healthy.

I was a proponent of signing Dye, but I had in mind a one year deal. No way in hell would I give him a 3 year deal unless it was for like $2 mil/per.

Were gonna have to accept the fact that if were gonna sign someone its gonna cost money..

We cant keep goin on saying "That guys too much forget it" because pretty soon were gonna be left with the bottom of the barrel..

I have no problem with us signing Dye, or Hidalgo for that matter.. but these guys most likely wont be signing for 2 mil

thats just how it is
