Meanwhile, the Red Sox are said to be interested in ex-Twins catcher A.J. Pierzynski, released Tuesday by the San Francisco Giants, but for about $1.5 million. Pierzynski appears to be premature. As long as they continue to have a shot at re-signing Varitek, the Sox will keep their distance from Pierzynski out of respect for the incumbent.
