December 18, 200421 yr We just started sigma notation and summations today....I'm hung up on one problem......the only rules we've been introduced to is if k (or i) is taken to the first, second or third power and we need the sumation, or one of a constant. I don't need to know this til Thursday, really, but i'd like to know now......I realize I'm probably missing some stupid ass factor I could take out... Any Calc people? The answer is 158/85......at least, that's what the back of the book says. Is multiplying this out easier? Or is there a shortcut with the four rules we learned?
December 18, 200421 yr Here's my question, why are you in Calculus? I had that my senior year and just about stabbed a pencil up my nose just to get out of a test....
December 18, 200421 yr yeah i dont know why im takin it but we're on anti derivatives and integrals so sorry
December 18, 200421 yr Author I dunno. I'm the only one getting an A in the class to the best of my knowledge. I like math, generally. I'm dreading the AP test. It's a good thing two of the other four people in my class are my best friends, or else I'd be bored for the most part. I liked analysis too. It's just interesting.....
December 18, 200421 yr Author yeah i dont know why im takin it but we're on anti derivatives and integrals so sorry That's the section we were on immediately before this. All sorts of crazy symbols...
December 18, 200421 yr Author i fall asleep everyday in calculus Ours is zero hour....worst possible time for focus....
December 18, 200421 yr Ours is zero hour....worst possible time for focus.... 3rd hour at 9 in the morning with a monotonic teacher who turns off the lights = im gone
December 18, 200421 yr Author 3rd hour at 9 in the morning with a monotonic teacher who turns off the lights = im gone 725 is when we usually begin.....
December 18, 200421 yr Author We're athletic nerds in the class, at least. We have starters from football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf and baseball.
December 18, 200421 yr [1/(0^2 +1)] + [1/(1^2 +1)] + [1/(2^2 +1)] + [1/(3^2 +1)] + [1/(4^2) +1] Answer = (1/1) + (1/2) + (1/5) + (1/10) + (1/17) which is roughly 1.8 I did it quickly, you might wanna double check that
December 18, 200421 yr Author I'm figuring that we have to do it longhand. I have no issue with that, but I just think I'm missing something is all... I got stuck on an acceleration problem earlier and spent 20 minutes on it.....wondering where the hell I messed up....I never changed mph to f/s and I had been doing it right the entire time. [/fun being a nerd]
December 18, 200421 yr The easiest way to solve a summation equation with only 5 k values like the one you provided is to simply do by hand or calculator (if it is allowed). I don't know if all the problems are that easy, but ones similar to that will take you one minute with paper and pencil. Solution: [1/(0+1)] + [1/(1+1)] + [1/(4+1)] + [1/(9+1)] + [1/(16+1)] = 158/85
December 18, 200421 yr Author Yeah, like I said while you were posting, I'd guess...I know how to do it that way....didn't know if there was a rule I was missing.... Thanks guys!
December 18, 200421 yr Yeah, like I said while you were posting, I'd guess...I know how to do it that way....didn't know if there was a rule I was missing.... Thanks guys! not many rules when it comes to summation. mostly you're just gonna have to do it like that
December 18, 200421 yr I'm dreading the AP test. I got low Bs in Calc BC (mainly because I didn't do the homework) and my teacher recommended I not take the AP test because it would just be wasting money. Took it. Got a 5.
December 18, 200421 yr I got low Bs in Calc BC (mainly because I didn't do the homework) and my teacher recommended I not take the AP test because it would just be wasting money. Took it. Got a 5. Same here Crimson, I always seemed about a week behind in everything -- Mainly because I didn't believe in books at that point. Hard to do homework without a book. I was an ass in HS. The teacher handed out predictions for the test the week before we took it. If you matched his prediction you got out of some long drawn out project over the last month of school... The prediction he handed me? 2 I got a 5.
December 18, 200421 yr Author When did you take your AP test? Aren't they generally in late April or so? When did you get your score back then?
December 18, 200421 yr All my AP tests were always first week of May, and I never got my results until June/July.
December 18, 200421 yr When did you take your AP test? Aren't they generally in late April or so? When did you get your score back then? First week in May, second week in June.
December 18, 200421 yr I remember the test was only like 4 big questions, and 2 of them were extremely easy. One had a graph with some guy's position over time and the questions were just about his velocity, acceleration, how far he went, etc.
