We just started sigma notation and summations today....I'm hung up on one problem......the only rules we've been introduced to is if k (or i) is taken to the first, second or third power and we need the sumation, or one of a constant. I don't need to know this til Thursday, really, but i'd like to know now......I realize I'm probably missing some stupid ass factor I could take out...

The answer is 158/85......at least, that's what the back of the book says.

 

Is multiplying this out easier? Or is there a shortcut with the four rules we learned?

We're athletic nerds in the class, at least. We have starters from football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf and baseball.

[1/(0^2 +1)] + [1/(1^2 +1)] + [1/(2^2 +1)] + [1/(3^2 +1)] + [1/(4^2) +1]

 

 

Answer = (1/1) + (1/2) + (1/5) + (1/10) + (1/17) which is roughly 1.8

 

I did it quickly, you might wanna double check that

I'm figuring that we have to do it longhand. I have no issue with that, but I just think I'm missing something is all...

 

I got stuck on an acceleration problem earlier and spent 20 minutes on it.....wondering where the hell I messed up....I never changed mph to f/s and I had been doing it right the entire time.

The easiest way to solve a summation equation with only 5 k values like the one you provided is to simply do by hand or calculator (if it is allowed). I don't know if all the problems are that easy, but ones similar to that will take you one minute with paper and pencil.

 

Solution:

+

[1/(4+1)]

+

[1/(9+1)]

+

[1/(16+1)]

 

= 158/85

not many rules when it comes to summation. mostly you're just gonna have to do it like that

I always seemed about a week behind in everything -- Mainly because I didn't believe in books at that point. Hard to do homework without a book. I was an ass in HS.

 

The teacher handed out predictions for the test the week before we took it. If you matched his prediction you got out of some long drawn out project over the last month of school... The prediction he handed me? 2

When did you take your AP test? Aren't they generally in late April or so? When did you get your score back then?

All my AP tests were always first week of May, and I never got my results until June/July.

First week in May, second week in June.

I remember the test was only like 4 big questions, and 2 of them were extremely easy. One had a graph with some guy's position over time and the questions were just about his velocity, acceleration, how far he went, etc.
