December 21, 200421 yr Nationals GM Jim Bowden announced tonight that he would tender contracts to his remaining arbitration-eligible players. Tony Armas Jr. and Tomo Ohka apparently will be back to join Livan Hernandez and Zach Day in the rotation. The Nationals would be fine letting Jon Rauch and John Patterson battle for the fifth spot, but they still hope to bring in another pitcher Padres acquired outfielder Dave Roberts from the Red Sox for outfielder Jay Payton, infielder Ramon Vazquez, RHP David Pauley and $2.65 million. Who thought Dave Roberts would even net three players and cash? The Padres will make him their center fielder and leadoff hitter against right-handers. Eric Young likely will start in his place against lefties. Roberts will probably get a chance to steal more than 40 bases next year, making him a potential $20 fantasy outfielder Orioles re-signed first baseman-outfielder Jay Gibbons to a one-year, $2.6 million contract. Gibbons agreed to accept the same salary he earned last year, although he can earn an additional $300,000 in incentives. He should start either in right field or at first base. The Orioles could bring in someone to platoon with him
December 21, 200421 yr Again, if any one cares, the Red sox will trade Ramon Vazquez to Tampa for Lugo.
December 21, 200421 yr A couple more Non-tenders: GM Brian Sabean obviously still feels as though he can land another outfielder. Mohr hit .274/.394/.437 in 263 AB last season, and he wasn't going to make much in arbitration. This looks like an awful move to us. There will be a lot of teams looking to add Mohr as a fifth outfielder. The Astros might see him as an early-season replacement for Lance Berkman. Dec. 21 - 12:27 am et Giants non-tendered infielder Cody Ransom. Ransom, 28, actually showed some offensive ability in limited at-bats in Triple-A and the majors last season. He'll get a chance to make another team as a utilityman. Dec. 21 - 12:24 am et Mohr had a .394 OBP last season? In limited at-bats, of course, but damn. What the hell is Sabean doing?
December 21, 200421 yr Mohr had a .394 OBP last season? In limited at-bats, of course, but damn. What the hell is Sabean doing? Cocaine?
December 21, 200421 yr Will we find out about ALL of the non-tenders by midnight, or will there be a bit of a waiting period before we find out all of the names?
December 21, 200421 yr Will we find out about ALL of the non-tenders by midnight, or will there be a bit of a waiting period before we find out all of the names? The deadline already passed i believe. It ends at 12 p.m. easteren time. The names should start to trickle out soon.
December 21, 200421 yr A couple more Non-tenders: Mohr had a .394 OBP last season? In limited at-bats, of course, but damn. What the hell is Sabean doing? He's under 35.
December 21, 200421 yr Any word on Ben Davis? Nope, looks like we are stuck with both davis and burke.
December 21, 200421 yr I know its not top on your priority but you have to consider how good the Red Sox made out in this Roberts/Payton deal. Dime-a-Dozen over the hill prospect Henri Stanley for Payton, Vazquez, Pauley, cash, and the greatest stolen base in major league history. Theo Epstein.
