December 22, 200421 yr I just got a subscription to Baseball Prospectus, so I thought I'd put it to good use. I was looking over their VORP stats (Value Over Replacement Player) and here's what I found for next year's projected lineup - in parentheses are their ranks behind other mostly everyday players (at least 450 PA, and about 350 for catchers): C - Jamie Burke 9.0 (7th in AL behind Pudge Rodriguez - 63.1, 18th in MLB behind Pudge) Ben Davis 0.2, he's so far down I don't feel like counting 1B - Paul Konerko 48.1 (2nd in AL behind Mark Teixiera - 52.6, 8th in MLB behind Pujols - 103.5) 2B - Willie Harris 5.2 (14th in AL behind Alfonso Soriano 39.8, and just behind Tony Graffanino, tied for 27th in MLB behind Mark Loretta - 76.2) 3B - Joe Crede 1.2 (26th in AL behind Melvin Mora 73.6, 39th in MLB, behind Adrian Beltre - 89.1) SS - Juan Uribe 32.1 (listed at second base, 4th in AL, 12th in MLB) RF - Jermaine Dye 23.3 (6th in AL behind Vladimir Guerrero, 14th in MLB behind Guerrero) CF - Scott Podsednik 19.3 (12th in NL behind Jim Edmonds - 88.9, 22nd in MLB, behind Edmonds) LF - Aaron Rowand 50.0 at CF (2nd in AL behind Johnny Damon, 3rd in MLB behind Jim Edmonds) note: Carlos Lee was 3rd in AL at 46.8, 6th in MLB DH - Frank Thomas 34.2 (4th in MLB behind David Ortiz - 71.3) Remember, these are subjective based on average statisitcs at each position, so just because Joe Crede is at 1.2 doesn't neccessarily mean he's less valuable than Willie Harris.
December 22, 200421 yr Author It's interesting to look at how weakened our lineup is going to be without Carlos and Mags, though. Especially if the Sox can't sign a replacement for Harris and Davis/Burke.
December 23, 200421 yr can you explain this statistic a little more for me? Value Over Replacement Player- The number of runs contributed beyond what a replacement-level player would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances.
December 23, 200421 yr Value Over Replacement Player- The number of runs contributed beyond what a replacement-level player would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances. so its just the average replacement player not what that players replacement would be on his team
