Schoney signs on with

Featured Replies

Scott Schoeneweis's arrival in Toronto today won't cause the same fuss as the arrival in New York City of another client of agent Scott Boras, Carlos Beltran.

But the Blue Jays' signing of Schoeneweis, a left-handed pitcher, to a two-year, $5.2-million (all figures U.S.) contract following a morning physical examination will at least allow general manager J. P. Ricciardi to put another check mark on a list of modest off-season goals.

The signing of Schoeneweis comes one day after closer Billy Koch returned to the fold, and also comes as Ricciardi gets ready to add a much-needed right-handed bat to the lineup by acquiring Shea Hillenbrand from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitching prospect Adam Peterson possibly as early as today.

That trade was held up by the completion yesterday of Shawn Green's physical examination. The Diamondbacks had retained Hillenbrand purely as insurance against the collapse of talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a trade for Green, which were finally completed Sunday night.

Ricciardi said yesterday that Hillenbrand would be used primarily as a designated hitter and to spell off Eric Hinske at first base against some lefty pitchers. The Blue Jays believe the addition of Hillenbrand coupled with free agent Corey Koskie will make up some of the offence lost by the departure of free agent Carlos Delgado. He is said to be mulling over a new three-year, $35-million offer from the Florida Marlins and according to ESPN is on the verge of being courted by the free-spending New York Mets.

Its just interesting how supposedly Schoney is going to be in their pen but he threw a b**** fit when the Sox wanted him to move to their pen.....

WOW!!! 2 yrs/$5.2 mil. I think Ricciardi needs to re-read Moneyball.

LMAO Shoney got overpaid.

But what he's getting isn't really surprising. Pitchers have been expensive as hell.

koch is there schoney is now there wow blue jays really like former white sox pitchers, who are not too good

I hope he does well. :canada

Two s***ty ex-Sox pitchers in two days!! Too bad Ritchie signed with the Pirates already.

Or to put it in persepective...

Jon Garland $3.4 mill

Scott Schoenwaste $2.6 mill

Gotta love Canada, :canada

Just call it a hunch, but I think we'll regret not keeping Scott Schoeneweis. I don't know how and don't ask me to justify it, because I can't. Let's just look at this at the end of the season.

Looking at out current rotation and drinking the WS Koolaid, I disagree. I thought Scott was a solid guy with some injuries that once healed would be solid again. I agree this could come back and haunt us.

Did anyone catch this?

Bad move.

Hillenbrand won't get you to the playoffs, the strong, young arms of the future will.

Wait! You disagree and agree in the same post? :huh

haha wow he did get overpaid. I suppose if he's getting that he doesn't care if he comes from the bullpen.

While under the influence of the koolaid, I disagree. Thinking of Shoe as a starter, I believe the five arms we have in the rotation are better than him. As a middle relief type guy, I don't want an unhappy guy riding the pine.

Taking the koolaid straw from my lips, I remember the early season guy, and keep thinking he's another pre-WS E-Lo. I could see him stringing a season that would make us miss him.

Make sense?

Yep. All clear.
