GLENDALE, California (CNN) -- A commuter train crash and derailment killed at least nine people, including a sheriff's deputy, on Wednesday outside Los Angeles, fire officials said.

 

A spokeswoman for the commuter line, Metrolink, said a Metrolink train hit a parked car at a railroad crossing, ran into another Metrolink train and crashed into a parked Union Pacific train.

 

The number of passengers involved in the derailment in Glendale, California, is not known.

 

Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams said more than 100 people are injured.

 

A law enforcement official identified one of the dead as Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy James Tutino, a 23-year-veteran, who was on his way to work.

 

Chris Gray, chief of the Glendale Fire Department, said more than 75 agencies are involved in the rescue and recovery, including some from Pasadena and Burbank.

 

Videotape shows Metrolink passenger train cars on their sides with shattered windows and the metal sheeting peeled backward and crushed inward.

 

The footage also shows several overturned orange Union Pacific rail cars.

 

Firefighters are struggling to reach Metrolink passengers believed to be trapped, placing ladders against the debris to get into the cars.

 

Gray said one area of twisted wreckage needs more inspection because authorities are not certain all accident victims are out.

 

Because commuter trains are involved it is difficult to determine who the passengers are and how many had boarded, Gray said.

 

The National Transpiration and Safety Board will take over the investigation. Relatives can call 818-548-6464 for additional information.

If you are going to kill yourself, don't involve other people, do not make a mess. If you are the cutter/slasher type, do it in the bathtub. Gas, garage with the engine running and plenty of fuel (Some people underestimate how long it takes and do not start with a full gas tank). No swallowing a gun, it's always messy, ditto on jumping. An overdose would also work nicely.

Not only was this guy an idiot, his timing and positioning could not have been worse. He left his jeep stuck in the middle track, where the southbound train full of people, hit it and derailed, it then struck a sitting freight train which forced it to accordion back across onto the northbound tracks & was struck by the northbound train that just happened to be going by at that time. This happened about a mile from where I was this morning. People fron Costco where carrying people away from the scene on lumber carts and whatever else they could find, until fire and rescue arrived. This clown needs to be shot.

According to an area police official there are multiple counts of murder and attempted murder pending. Saw it on WGN news.

I love assholes like this. In my line of work, I've dealt with a few jerkoffs that are too chicken s*** to kill themselves cause they are so alone, so they go out and involve an innocent in their suicide. Case in point..... jagoff decides he has nothing more to live for so he decides to WALK across I-57's N/B lanes and is promptly hit by a lady in her 70's who was going home with her daughter and 4 grandchildren. This woman was an emotional wreck when I got there. I told her it wasn't her fault..... that he wasn't supposed to be out there in the first place (walking on an interstate highway is against the law). Didn't matter. This woman will live the rest of her life believing she killed somebody and that it was HER fault.

 

This guy should most definitely be charged with numerous crimes and should be locked up nude in a cell for the rest of his life. Of course, the nudity probably isn't necessary considering he's too chicken s*** to hang himself or put a bullet in his head.

This whole scenario just makes you want to puke. Pick any negative adjective and it probably applies. Senseless.
