Warrick asked to be released on Tuesday

Wide receiver Peter Warrick, the fourth player selected in the 2000 draft, was apprised Tuesday morning by the Cincinnati Bengals that he will be released later in the day as the club reduces its roster to the mandatory 65-player limit. 

 

The release of Warrick, who appeared in only four games in 2004 because of leg and shin injuries, was not altogether surprising. The five-year veteran missed much of camp as he rehabilitated from his injuries and appeared in just one of Cincinnati's three preseason contests.

 

At various times in camp, coach Marvin Lewis hinted broadly that he felt Warrick might not have been as diligent as necessary in his rehabilitation. Lewis noted to ESPN.com in a training camp visit that the Bengals staff, at that point, was preparing as though Warrick might not be available.

 

Certainly there were less than subtle hints that Warrick would not be a part of the team's plans for 2005, particularly given the Bengals' new-found depth at wide receiver.

 

On Monday, when he returned to practice for the first time in a week, Warrick made a public request that, if the Bengals were going to jettison him, they do so in this first round of cuts, rather than wait until the weekend, when rosters must be pared to 53 players, the NFL regular-season limit.

 

"If they're going to let me go, let me go [Tuesday]," Warrick said Monday after practice. "Don't let me go the last week. Don't do me like that. That's disrespectful to me. Let me go [Tuesday]. It's been decided. I just don't know what they've decided."

 

Speculation has been rife for weeks that Warrick, with a base salary of $2.28 million for this season, would be either released or traded. It is believed that a few teams, notably the New England Patriots, showed some interest in acquiring Warrick, but a deal was never consummated. The former Florida State standout, if healthy, as he has claimed, should generate solid interest in the open market.

 

Warrick, 28, enjoyed a career best season in 2003, with 79 receptions for 819 yards and seven touchdowns. For his career, Warrick has 264 catches for 2,811 yards and 18 scores, having appeared in 66 games, with 55 starts.

 

Never as fast as advertised when he came out of college, Warrick nonetheless has good quickness and finally flourished when the Bengals moved him from an outside receiver spot and into the slot position.

 

 

If I am Bears management, I take a hard look at Peter Warrick. He, along with Moose, would look very good, and be a very reliable on the field target for Orton.

 

Sure, he's been hurt the last couple of years, but he is definitely #2 calibre in the league, and he would definitely make me feel better about our recieving corps, bc we're too young right now.

Peerless Price is gonna be available too

Peter Warrick always had great talent, but the attitude of David Terrell. I wouldn't go out of my way to get him on this team, but then, you never know....

I would much rather take my chances with Warrick...

warrick is a good middle of the field guy and could really fit the mold of a number 2 receiver for our scheme. Unfortunatley, I dont think we will look at him because of the possible attitude problem. I think we had enough of that last year with A train and DT.

A lot of players have attitude problems when they play for one of the worst franchises in the league.

 

Dillon had problems, then went to NE and was a model citizen.

 

Warrick is one of the most talented college WR's ever. There is no gaurantee he will ever transfer the talent to the NFL, but I would be willing to take a risk on him.

 

Warrick could really do well with the Bears. If you watched Orton at Purdue most of his passes were quick routes that let the wr make moves. Once Warrick has the ball in his hands there is no questioning his ability.

We have jack s*** for depth at WR, so yeah, I'd be glad if we signed him (even with the injuries). It seems like 7 out of every 10 quality wide receivers in the NFL have attitude problems, so it ain't that big of a deal if you really think about it.

 

Cincinatti has excellent pieces at the WR slot. Chad Johnson is one of the best in the league, and Houshmandzandah or whatever the f*** his name is is a damn good receiver. They can afford to release Warrick without thinking twice about it.

 

Now, the Falcons cutting Price with their lack of depth at WR is very alarming. That guy went from borderline all star to scrub in the blink of an eye.

i think the Eagles want him.

Either Warrick or Price would be an upgrade from Gage or Wade.

The thing is, do many teams have much cap money left at this stage of the season?

I'd HAPPILY take Warrick or Price. Price was molded into a star by...Moulds of the Bills but as soon as he got to Atlanta with that Qb they got over there, whats his name? That only runs every 2 out of 3 plays, his career went s***ty. Id take either for a good price.

I think Price would be a borderline all-star again if he was a #2 WR. He's clearly not a #1 and I thought that to myself when ATL signed him.

The Eagles have like 15 million lol..... they could sign both of them and than have more cap room.

Funny thing... Laverneous Coles was second fiddle to Peter Warrick back in college... how things have changed.

Price is done. If you can't crack the starting lineup ahead of Dez White, a rookie, and a 2nd year player who didn't even get on the field in his 1st season, no matter who your QB is, you know you're in trouble.

 

Warrick is just too injury prone. He's got talent no doubt, but it depends on the cost. I'd think a team like the Ravens or even the Dolphins would be more interested in him. They may have to wait to see what Corey Simon does 1st however.

Okay, essentially a sign and trade, but did Price get to pick his team and get a new contract? If you want to get all technical, well that's what happened. Bears need one of these guys.
