September 13, 200520 yr I know, more playoff talk. http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-ssep13.html Marte might be on bubble Nothing left-handed reliever Damaso Marte has done of late sits well with manager Ozzie Guillen, and that could cost Marte a spot on the postseason roster should the Sox make the playoffs. More than being ineffective in his most recent starts, Marte drew Guillen's ire for arriving late to Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Though he didn't intend to use the lefty, Guillen ordered him to leave as a disciplinary move. The incident, coupled with indications Marte has been bothered by neck soreness, could become a factor when the Sox have to make cuts for their 25-man postseason roster. Rookie Brandon McCarthy has made a case for being included in postseason play, and either he or Orlando Hernandez likely would have to assume a relief role. The Sox could choose to rely on Neal Cotts as their situational left-hander, but rookie Bobby Jenks also has been effective against lefties, holding them to a .098 average (4-for-41). Lefties are batting .272 against Marte, with right-handers hitting only .225 against him. Guillen planned to discuss Marte's situation with general manager Ken Williams on Monday, but neither could be reached for comment.
September 13, 200520 yr I guess the Sun Times has a crystal ball and can see into the future that the Sox have made the playoffs.
September 13, 200520 yr Meet the loveable cast of left-handed characters: Kevin Walker Arnie Munoz David Sanders Paulino Reynoso ...Yeah, go for it Ozzie. Send Marte packing.
September 13, 200520 yr We're going to need Marte down the stretch more against teams like the Indians and Twins than we would likely need him in the playoffs. I know Marte has been struggling, but this team needs him. If he's not available, Ozzie has to make better use out of guys like Cotts and Jenks.
September 13, 200520 yr QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 10:36 AM) We're going to need Marte down the stretch more against teams like the Indians and Twins than we would likely need him in the playoffs. I know Marte has been struggling, but this team needs him. If he's not available, Ozzie has to make better use out of guys like Cotts and Jenks. All I can say in reply is that Cotts/Jenks are fine options if they're used right, but they don't measure up to Marte when he is actually on. When he has things working, he can be as dominant as anyone in our bullpen except Jenks. Trouble is, he hasn't been on for a couple months now. Either he has some sort of mechanincs problem or he's having genuine arm problems, and either one is a concern. If Marte cannot get people out, he will merely take up a useful roster spot, no matter how much Ozzie likes having 2 lefties in the pen.

September 13, 200520 yr QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 01:26 PM) Meet the loveable cast of left-handed characters: Kevin Walker Does Walker even HAVE a pic of him where he is actually having something good happen to him?
September 13, 200520 yr I know this much, I don't want to see David Sanders EVER replace Marte. This guy is a complete junkballer who is not an arm we need in our bullpen.
