November 8, 200520 yr Sox not rushing to replace Rooney November 8, 2005 The White Sox' World Series run pushed back the timetable to find a replacement for radio voice John Rooney. ''We were starting to look at candidates, but things got put on hold during the postseason,'' said Bob Grim, the Sox senior director of business development and broadcasting. ''We're starting to look at some folks again, but we're nowhere near making a decision yet.'' The Sox radio affiliation with WMVP-AM ended with the World Series, with the team's radio rights shifting to WSCR-AM. Grim, Sox marketing director Brooks Boyer and WSCR executive Mitch Rosen met last week to begin reviewing candidates to replace Rooney, who chose to leave after 18 years because of contract issues. His longtime partner, Ed Farmer, is returning as the play-by-play voice. Farmer also is being consulted during the search process. Grim said a number of candidates have come forward, with the team's preference to find another former Sox player. ''We're looking for a former player, ideally with some experience,'' he said. ''We've had a bunch of guys showing interest, and a lot of guys have re-surfaced, but there's no real clear-cut answer.'' Among those known to have applied are Steve Lyons, Ron Kittle, John Cangelosi and Lyle Mouton. Lyons, whose broadcast career began at WMVP, has been a television broadcaster for Fox and for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Others like former players Jack McDowell, who worked for Fox-TV locally during the postseason, and Robin Ventura, aren't likely candidates because their family circumstances rule out a 162-game work schedule. The Sox and WSCR plan to debut a new program on Nov. 19 called ''Sox Weekly,'' but the new radio voice won't be selected by then. Farmer will be part of the weekly one-hour program, but other WSCR personalities will take part until Rooney's successor is chosen. ''We won't rush into this,'' Grim said. ''We want to see who fits in best. Our first priority is someone with Sox ties, and if that's not possible then we'd look outside.'' Lyle Mouton?
November 8, 200520 yr Lyle has a great speaking voice.... and he played the game. Side note.. John & family moved into their new pad in the western burb's over the weekend..
November 8, 200520 yr QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 12:54 PM) Lyle Mouton? I guess that mean we won't be witnessing a comeback from Lyle Mouton...
November 8, 200520 yr Author I knew heard him talk. It just took me by surprise from all the other names being thrown around.
November 8, 200520 yr QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 12:54 PM) Lyle Mouton? Guess Lorn Brown and Joe McConnell wern't avilable!!! If Lyle has the voice,then maybe he's okay.Steve Lyons don't look too bad,and John Cangelosi was decent in his gig at the Score during the postseason.

November 8, 200520 yr Nope. They both hit, and I believe Lyle smashed his head into the other guy pretty bad. I remember Lyle just lying on the ground almost lifeless.
November 8, 200520 yr Just did a check, I'm almost positive it was Martinez. I was thinking Dave, but couldn't come up with his last name for some reason. Mouton is quite a bit larger than Dave, right?

November 8, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) Just did a check, I'm almost positive it was Martinez. I was thinking Dave, but couldn't come up with his last name for some reason. Mouton is quite a bit larger than Dave, right? By a rather large margin... Dave would have been the one on the floor if those 2 hit.
November 8, 200520 yr But that was part of the weird thing. Lyle hit his head on Dave somehow, and he went down like a sack wet laundry. Dave was in center, and Lyle was in right, and they were both rushing to the same spot in the middle, and they hit. It was one of the worst collisions I have still yet to see.
November 8, 200520 yr Ah, found this: The collision between Martinez and Mouton took place on May 11, 1997, with Mouton breaking a bone in his face and Martinez suffering a slight concussion. Guillen also remembers his own full-speed meeting with left fielder Tim Raines, now his first-base coach, which tore up his knee and cost him most of the 1992 season. Here is that site: http://whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/wap/new...167701&c_id=cws Albert Belle is 3-for-3, including his 8th career grand slam, and drives in five runs to lead the White Sox to a 8–5 win over the A's. Wilson Alvarez (2-4) strikes out 12 in seven innings to give the Sox a sweep of the 4-game series from Oakland. Sox outfielders Dave Martinez and Lyle Mouton are injured when they collide while chasing a fly ball in the fifth inning. Mouton breaks a bone in his face while Martinez suffers a slight concussion. November 8, 200520 yr QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) Did Mouton use to play catcher at all? Not in the majors.
November 10, 200520 yr I went to high school with Lyle. At that time, basketball was his game. Smart and well spoken guy.
November 10, 200520 yr QUOTE(GreenSox @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 08:13 PM) I went to high school with Lyle. At that time, basketball was his game. Smart and well spoken guy. He seems to be the most qualified choice... Psycho sucks on Fox.. the other candidates are just plain weak. I believe Lyle will do a good job, hopefully we can get another guy later to replace Farmer who really blows.

November 10, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 03:13 PM) Ah, found this: Here is that site: http://whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/wap/new...167701&c_id=cws I have heard that Lyle never felt comfortable in the field after the collision and is mostly why his career ended early.
November 10, 200520 yr QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) Wow, I'm getting old if I can remember Lyle. No you're not. I can remember him too. Now if you could remember like Black Jack pitching with the Sox, that would be a different story. Lyle Mouton...that is going way back though. I remember he hit a game winning homer against the Rangers early in the season. The Rangers were unbeaten at the time IIRC...8-0 perhaps? I'll dig it up real quick, even though I think I've dug it up before...lol. EDIT: Ya, I thought so. Was off by 1 in the W-L...Texas was 7-0 going in. Mouton, game winner Edited November 10, 200520 yr by witesoxfan
