Padres trade Sean Burroughs for Dewon Brazelton

Featured Replies

Interesting trade, I thought that the Padres really liked Burroughs

Padres acquired RHP Dewon Brazelton from the Devil Rays for third baseman Sean Burroughs.

Brazelton can only take a 20-percent cut in arbitration, so he'll have to make at least $900,000 next season. At this point, he hardly seems worth it, though if there's any place for him to turn his career around, it's San Diego. If he's kept, he'd likely be a middle reliever initially.

Not a bad move by either team. Its basically a swap of talented guys that haven't lived up to there hype. Brazelton has a really live arm and the change of scenery could do him well.

I don't quite get this move from the Drays perspective, but I guess they want some 3rd base depth (especially after they move Huff).

The Devil Rays now have Sean Burroughs to play third base, B.J. Upton to play shortstop, Jorge Cantu to play second base, and Tino Martinez may be interested in playing for them again. Julio Lugo and Aubrey Huff will be traded soon.

Meh...that's why the Pads tried trading Burroughs to us last summer for Crede? Remember that? Glad that didn't go through. Burroughs is horrible and won't amount to anything in the majors.

I like this deal for the Pads.

It was for Borch not Crede. Interesting move here, basically guys who havent lived up to their potential being swapped for one another.

That's right, my mistake. I don't remember what I thought then about the proposed deal. After Crede's playoff performance, Burroughs would have been gone this offseason anyways.

There are serious doubts within the Tampa organization about whether or not Upton will ever be good enough defensively to play SS.

Burroughs has actually had a couple decent offensive seasons as a #2 hitter. Borchard hasn't had any decent offensive seasons. Unfortunately, there's a reason we didn't get Burroughs for Borchard. I wish we had though.

This is from today:

http://www.sptimes.com/2005/12/07/Rays/Ray...for_Upton.shtml

DALLAS - Top infield prospect B.J. Upton said he came away from a meeting this week with new executive vice president Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon feeling good about two things: The Rays don't plan to move him from shortstop; and they are not adamant that he open the season in the minors.

Well, the information I was told was from the previous regime, so that's promising to see for Upton. They might as well let him and Delmon learn at the MLB level.

This probably affects the Crawford discussion...if Fields was actually going to be a principle piece in that deal. Is Burroughs the young 3B that Tampa was looking for? I don't mind going to battle with Owens or Anderson but the thought of Crawford batting lead-off and Pods batting second makes me drool.

It would be the other way around.

Yeah, what they said.

I kinda like this deal for both teams. Brazelton is a real talent and needed a change of scenery while Burroughs still has a chance to be a nice player. GOod trade all around I'd say

Two guys I'm crazy about. I hope both can get on track with their new teams.

...wanted Burroughs, though.
