I agree. But you cant deny that the NFC safety position is slim pickings. Brown will always be rememberd for the 2 greatest plays of the 2001 season in back-to-back weeks against SF and Claveland. I will NEVER forget that. But for this season, I will definitely remember his shot on Marcus Pollard. WOW!

There aren't many great safeties as is, but Browns definately amongst the best in the biz (AFC or NFC). Hell the best in the AFC isn't even playing this year (I happen to think Rodney Harrison is as good as it gets).

At the same time Polamalu is a better version of Roy Williams. Pol plays the run tremendous but does have lapses in coverage. At the same time he makes some big plays in coverage and overall is a good Safety.

I don't follow the Skins enough to tell you about Sean Taylor. I just know he's got a crazy skill set and has a ton of off field issues. I have no idea how healthy he was this year or if he even came close to living up to his hype. Than there is Ed Reed whose solid but on a lousy Bmore team. Lynch I'm guessing is gonna be in the probowl. He wasn't what he once was, but he's still solid.

Your not going to name many safeties in this league that are better than a healthy Mike Brown, imo.

How did Orton and someone of the offense not named Jones get passed up, is beyond me

Once again, I agree. I tell you, if it wasn;t for the off-field issues, Sean Taylor might very well be the best safety the league has seen since Ronnie Lott. He is great in coverage and good against the run. Polamalu is a lesser version of Mike Brown IMO. About as good against the run but like you said, not great in coverage. Lynch was always the top of the Safety crop in the NFC until he left for the AFC and the Bronco's. Lassiter was great in his days in Arizona and I agree, Rodney Harrison is probably the best in the game now. IMO, Harrison, Reed, Taylor, Brown, and Lynch are top 5 in thw NFL. But hey, a Pro-Bowler is a Pro-Bowler. In 2-3 years, Brown/Harris will be the best safety tandem in the NFL.

I can't say that. Harris has played well as a rookie, but he has a long ways to go and who knows how Brown will be 2-3 years from now. He's long talked about hanging it up at a younger age so he doesn't have to deal with all the long term effects of playing football.

I do think Mike Brown will one day be a coach for the Bears (in some way shape or form).

Hmm. I have never thought of that. I wouldn't go as far as Defensive Coordinator but I can see him as a Secondary coach or scout even maybe.

where's Kyle Orton???? He lead this team to 9 wins. That's TOTALLY worthy of being n the Pro-Bowl team!! I DEMAND KYLE ORTON!
QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 12:02 PM)
What the hell has mike brown done this year to deserve going?

He has had one of the most solid seasons of any safety in the NFC. Thats why he is going. He might not have the overall #'s . His intimidating prescence out there has been the key of this defense. Many consider him the leader of the defense. No question he deserves to go.

Haha just listening to Briggs, he sounds cool as hell.

"What's it mean to be goin with so many guys from your defense?"

"It's great not only becuase it shows how great our defense is but also I can try and find Tommie on the plane and bother him for a few hours..."

Technically, he led the team to 10 wins. Since he started the Falcons game, he got the win.

HOw important is Mike Brown? Take a look at the Steelers game. No Mike Brown and the Bus goes and runs over the Bears. The defense, while it still looked better than most teams, didn't look right. Against the Falcons, that was more about spying on Ron Mexico, which has more to do with Urlacher than Brown, but Dunn broke off a couple of runs that prolly wouldn't have happened with a healthy Mike Brown in there.

And off subject...kudos to Mike Green for layin' out Michael Jenkins. Awesome.

hahaha do you guys not know what a Strong Safety is and what his role is? Alright i will teach you guys.

Strong Safety (abbreviated SS commonly) is more of a LBer, hence more valuable in stopping the run. Coverage skills would be nice, but doesn't make or break a strong safety. Few besides Ed Reed have both. If you are below average in coverage and excellent against the run, you are one damn fine STRONG safety.

A free safety (often abbreviated FS) on the other hand is more of a coverage back, with run stopping a secondary talent. If you have below average coverage skills as a Free Safety (FS), you are not a good free safety.

So when you guys try to evaluate safeties, keep in mind that there are two different safeties. It does not work if you compare them to a different position. You wouldn't say "Urlacher isn't good at catching TD passes" cause of course, he is not supposed to be, otherwise he would be a WR.

Roy Williams is a strong safety, run is more important than pass.

Check and Mate.

Obviously SS most importantly must be good against the run but that is no excuse to be pitiful in coverage. He would be good for an OLB, but he doesn't play there, he plays SS which (while run is more important) must be strong against both to be as good as you claim him to be. You cannot be a great SS when you blow nuts in pass coverage.

and Ed Reed isn't a SS

Let's compare Mr. Williams to Mr. Brown shall we?

Both plays Strong Safety. Both are excellent against the run. Both are hard hitters. One can actually cover while one gets burned. Which is the better of the 2? The one who does not get burned. Therefore, Mr. Brown > Mr. Williams. That was my lesson.

pitiful? cause he got beat twice by speedy santana moss? you underrate is coverage. he was a free safety for the first 2 years of his career. he was satisfactory. earlier in this thread it was said that polamalu is good in coverage but just had lapses. is against washington not a lapse? besides that washington game, he has not been "pitiful", as you stated. ask him to cover a TE, and he will do satisfactory, ask him to cover moss, one of the fastest in the league, and you are asking for too much.

he is no better and no worse than below average against the pass. so it ends up being you underrating him, while you complain about others overrating him. funny.

I question why John Lynch is going when Greg Wesley has 20 more tackles and 4 more interceptions. I havent seen many Dnever games this year so maybe its other things (reputation, intangibles, whatever) but i thought Wesley had a solid chance this season.

Yeah that can't go both ways or anything...

Look you are a Cowboy fan...everytime they are discussed you come in and back them, if Roy Williams was on the Bears you would bash him.
