MurcieOne
Lovie is now 15-15... after a poor year last year, and appears to have this team on the brink of dominance in the NFC North.... My question to the board is... is Lovie Smith the Chicago Bears Head coach in 2010? Do you see Lovie leading this team deep into the playoffs, the super bowl? my answer is yes to both questions, i think Lovie is the right man for this team... I think he possesses all of Dick Jauron's good qualities (respectable, defensive genious) and yet unlike Jauron... he is not afraid to make the big move to improve his team... and will hold his players accountable for their play on the field. Lovie is here, i support him (even with that pittsburgh 3 and 13 call).... The bears should and will own this division for a number of years... and he is the right person to take this team wherever it can go. SoxFan1
I totally agree. And with most of the defense signed on for a few years, (Hillenmeyer is the only FA after this season) I feel confident that this team can be a winning team for a few years. Defense wins championships and the Bears have the #1 defense in the NFL. Only thing I would adrress is possibl more CB depth defensivley. With a defensive core, it allows the management to focus on improving the offense. Hopefully, we can get what we expect from Grossman. Benson and Jones seem to be doing "ok" at the RB position and the O-Line is one of the best in the league. We need to improve at the TE and WR positions. If we can get a consistent passing attack with the power-run game we have, and with the defense on top of it...we will be a force for a long time. And Lovie is there to lead us. I like our offensive coordinator for the 1st time in a long time and I think we have a really skilled GM who has a great knowledge of the cap and is going to do all he can to ensure we are able to stay good for a long time. MurcieOne
The sheer idea that a defense this talented is going to be intact (Hillenmeyer will be back) for atleast a couple more years... is a ringing endorsement that Angelo knows what hes doing with the cap... and can put a winner on the field. his draft picks past the 1st round (although Rex is back, Harris is a probowler, and Cedric Benson looks like he can handle the rock) have been stellar as well.... Tillman, Vasher (PB), C. Harris (6th round), Briggs (PB) hard to make a case against Angelo after 05....

I agree 100% Really? Angelo has established himself as a brilliant defensive scout. He gets plenty of praise, at least from those who have an opinion that matters. Of course, he's also a terrible scout when it comes to offensive talent.

Bradley, Berrian and Thomas Jones all look good. Jones is having a tremendous season and the Bears signed him to a very affordable deal. At the same time I think both Berrian and Bradley have flashed quite a bit of upside.

I guess that Angelo still has a chance to show that he knows what he is doing when it comes to the offensive side of the ball, but defense has always been his area of excellence since he came into the league some 20 odd years ago. Rarely, if ever, will you have a guy who excels in both facets.
kapkomet
Even though I don't think the Bears are deep or good enough to win this year, I do think they are heading in the right direction - and if they can get just a little more offensive power, they are good enough to be in any game. Once the consistency is there, confidence gets gained. This team will be pretty dangerous next year. And even this year, they can make some noise, but I don't think they are quite deep enough this year.
GoodAsGould
Idonno I think the only offensive upgrade we need for the offense is a TE. The WR's arent great but I think Bradley/Berrian/Gage are good enough to compliment Muhsin the way this team is setup. Than a course some OL depth would help too but those can be taken in 3rd/4th round. I think its important to keep the defense up.... So I wouldnt mind us taking some defensive talent in the 2nd or 3rd round in next draft either.

Other than that, I agree. Lovie has the technical knowledge of being a great defensive coordinator and has the guts required to make the tough personnel decisions, just like Ozzie. Maybe he'll do it this year, maybe not, but this guy is unlike any coach we've seen in Chicago in a long, long time.

So I wouldnt mind us taking some defensive talent in the 2nd or 3rd round in next draft either. IMO, Bradley was a big loss for us. If we could draft or sign a definite nomber 2 just to have that tandem like Moulds/Price, Owens/Rice, Harrison/Wayne, or Mathis/Martin were/are then that opens up more of a pass game. Having Mush and a big threat #2 would allow Bradley to be the slot reciever on most plays and get his confidence up. Just for comparison, we'll use the 49ers of the late 90's. Rice was the main guy and JJ Stokes was their big #2 guy. Then, they put TO in as the third option and let him play the slot so he can grow. Look how that turned out (on the field.) Bradley definitely has some talent but I just dont think he is a #2 WR yet.

DBAHO
I think St. Louis is wishing Lovie Smith was their coach right now. As for can he take the team all the way, it's hard to say yet. He's never head coached a playoff game before. But the Bears need to keep building through the draft, and fills those weaknesses that have been mentioned in this thread. Wedge
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 23, 2005 -> 07:22 PM) Defensive prowess maybe? I think that's a stretch, too. Jauron's defense's in Jacksonville never really impressed. In Chicago, I think that 2001 defense was strong because it was really talented, but it didn't do much that impressed me schematically. It routinely got burned by the screen pass (think the Green Bay games) and neither Jauron nor Blache were able to adjust it seemed like (this was highlighted in the game against the Eagles). I know Smith is a phenomenal defensive coach, given his tenure as the DC in St. Louis. Rivera seems pretty good and I think this staff is way better equipped schematically to make in game adjustments. My only complaint is that when they're getting beat with the pass, they try to bring more pressure. I wish they'd do a better job of dropping guys into a more exotic coverage. A good example is the Green Bay game, end of the first half. Favre was beating us and we brought more guys and he just got the passes off faster. We sort of lucked out with the big pick to end the half there. But yeah, Smith and Rivera are waaaaay better than Jauron and Blache.
