LHP Chad Bentz

Chad Bentz - R - White Sox

RotoWorld.com:  White Sox signed LHP Chad Bentz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Bentz allowed seven runs in two innings for the Marlins and had a 4.22 ERA in 30 appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque last season. As things stand now, he'd compete with Arnie Munoz, Paulino Reynoso and Corwin Malone to become the second lefty in the White Sox pen. The team will keep looking for alternatives, though. Anybody know anything about this guy?

If he had a 4.22 ERA in AAA, I'd hate to see what he's like in the majors.

He seems like a long shot, but you never know with Cooper. He doesn't have a right hand, so he pitches very similar to Jim Abbott. Abbott threw a no-hitter against the Yanks.

He's 25, pitched for Montreal in 2004 as I recall. Also I think he's the guy who had a horrible outing vs. the Cubs last year.

Kevin Walker, pt. II :huh

Oh man, how do you not title this thread "Sox get Bentz"

Keep in mind that was pitching for AAA Albuquerque...offensive numbers are much inflated in the PCL. Just throwin it out there

I expect 2 or 3 more of these signings.

Not being a spoiled sport or anything, or disrspectful to other posters, but I note on many similar type reports how we tend to lay things at the feet, or on the shoulders of Cooper. You have to have something to work with first before believing Mr. Cooper can make them the next star. I know nothing about Bentz, but if we compare him ability and recordwise to Munoz or Walker then we ain't go much, but someone to pitch at AAA.

Exactly. It doesn't hurt to bring this guy into spring training, but he has to be a long shot to do anything. He hasn't pitched much in the major leagues, but when he has he hasn't been good.

I really dont think anyone is expecting Bentz or Redding or whoever else they sign to be a rock in the pen. If they are, then they are overrated Cooper in a big way. Its a very low risk signing, that could turn out to benifit the club in some way.

Wasnt Ozuna basically brought in like this?

Exactly, if you can ocassionally get these type of moves to pan out than it makes it all worth while and the Sox have found a few people this way over the past couple years that helped give the club quality players to round out the every day roster.

I remember when this guy came up with the Expos. As far as Bentz goes. He was a 7th round selection and while he hasn't put up great numbers in the majors, he was semi rushed. His main problem appears to be command. Or at least that was the case in 04 with the Expos where he made 36 appearances with a 5.86 ERA. He gave up just 23 hits in 27.2 innings but also walked 23 while striking out 18. He also gave up a whopping 5 HR.

We need leftys in the minors also,so I'm sure he is just a body for for that. If he works out great,if not we can use him in the minors.

I can't believe this isn't in the breaking news on ESPNNEWS. Damn ESPN and their east coast bias.

IIRC he had something going on against the Sox too until Bo Jackson's 7th inning single

I have a feeling KW is going to sign a few more lefties to have them all come in and fight it out in spring training. Might find a diamond out there.

im not too excited about this trade, but we'll see what happens

all our pitchers are going to throw complete games anyways, so we dont need arms in the bullpen :P

Isn't this the pitcher without a right hand? I remember hearing about him.
