Aurilia agrees to deal with Reds; Weaver and Dodgers let deadline pass

NEW YORK (AP) -- Second baseman Rich Aurilia and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract Sunday night, about three hours before the team would have lost the right to re-sign him until May.

Jeff Weaver, who went 14-11 with a 4.22 ERA for the Dodgers last year, did not reach an agreement with Los Angeles before the midnight EST deadline.

Also letting the deadline pass were infielder Alex Gonzalez and Tampa Bay, and pitcher Pedro Astacio and San Diego.

First baseman Eduardo Perez, the fifth remaining unsigned free agent among the 26 offered salary arbitration on Dec. 7, has been working on finalizing a contract with Cleveland and has not been talking to the Devil Rays, his former club.

Under baseball's labor contract, free agents offered arbitration have until Jan. 8 to re-sign with their former teams. After that, they can't re-sign until May 1.

Los Angeles: we have Contreras waiting for you.

Williams: take Los Angeles to the cleaners. Let someone overpay for our players.

We don't need Contreras traded; Los Angeles needs atleast one rotation position. Unless you expect Lowe/Tomko/Penny/Perez/Seo an attractive alternative. LA must feel some reserve with the rotation if they were negotiating with Weaver as long as they did.

Anaheim?  Baltimore?  Mets?  Phillies?

Before the Sunday deadline passed, free agent Jeff Weaver told the Dodgers he would accept a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year based on performance.

He probably still wanted something in the neighborhood of $10 million per year, which was beyond what the Dodgers were thinking. The Los Angeles Times says the the Orioles are expected to pursue Weaver, and the Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Angels might show interest.

With mazzone Weaver might finally become the stud he was apposed to be.

I don't really think L.A. has too much of a need of him, they acquired Seo as a stopgap a few days ago, and they think Billingsly will be ready to come up before the end of this season.
