heard chris spielman on local radio out here today. he's doing the senior bowl for espn and is calling in daily reports to the local shows (he normally hosts one).

Lewis is a senior. Davis on the other hand, is a junior, so I don't know.

Actually, NFL teams move players to positions that suit them better all the time. Matt Jones was a 1st round pick as a WR last year even though he had played QB his entire collegiate career. Davis played TE his entire collegiate career, but at 6'3", he's a little small for the TE position in the NFL, he doesn't block well, and he has great hands and WR caliber speed. TEs are usually big targets (think as big or bigger than the QB) that can catch the ball well but can also pass and run block. I never said Davis couldn't be a good TE, nor did I say that he can't play TE at the NFL level. I just think that his skill set would translate better to the NFL as a WR. As a TE, he'd probably be similar to Antonio Gates (primarily used for receiving) or Dallas Clark (primarily used for receiving and sometimes lines up at the 3rd WR position). As for your Young comparison, no I wouldn't move Young to RB, because I feel he will do better as a QB. I would, however, move Vick to RB, because his height isn't ideal for the QB position, his accuracy sucks, as does his decision making, and he has ideal size and speed to play RB (think Reggie Bush).

6'3 definitely isn't too small for the TE position. Alge Crumpler, a top 5 TE in the NFL, stands all of 6'2. Randy McMichael is a very solid TE for Miami, and is almost exactly the same size as Vernon. Same with Chris Cooley in Washington, Jermaine Wiggins in Minny etc.

 

Also, don't forget that Heath Miller, Pitt's 1st round TE last year, had blocking as a weakness, and has turned it into a strength in just one full season. Vernon has OL type strength at the TE position, and just needs coaching and the willpower to become a good blocker. I'm not sure if he has the willpower part, as I have been questioning his head for a while. But he has the potential to be talked about in the same breath as Gates, Gonzales, Crumpler, etc.

Davis to WR is just an interesting thought I had that I figured would make for good discussion. Oh well, not everything works out as you'd like. I still say he'd be an awesome WR.

don't forget, you can line up the TE as a 3rd WR, or motion him into the slot. Davis at TE would make the Bears more versatile.

well there are a bunch of teams in front of Chicago who could use a pass-catching TE, so you're right, it's very likely he will be gone by #26. but I can hope that these teams instead decide to try to bolster their defenses or O-Lines, can't I?

He started out by saying that there's no big time TE prospects this year and that none will go in the top five. He then mentioned Vernon Davis as a possibility for the Bears at #26. He then said that their best option at that pick would probably be Marcedes Lewis, he failed to even mention Leonard Pope and said that every TE comming into this years draft is proficient at both catching the ball and blocking. I was physically ill by the end of the interview.

Now, I don't think I agree with either of those, but, draft day is crazy and nothing would surpise me.

 

That said, I just can't imagine Vernon Davis falling. Unless teams are just scared to death about what he has between the ears--or, the lack thereof--he's just a talent, pure and simple...I'm thinking Rams at 11, no later than 17.

there are teams that could use a TE like Davis, but they also have more pressing needs. the Rams could use secondary help, Cincy as well, so it is possible he could fall to the Bears (and I'll keep telling myself that until April 29).
