Here is a roundup of the latest news and information coming out regarding Iowa State Athletics.

 

-As eluded to yesterday, Alex Thompson is going through the process of being able to transfer to ISU from the University of Iowa. Several sources indicated that Alex has spoken with the Iowa coaching staff about his scholarship status and what his options are in regard to being released from his commitment. A formal announcement is likely to come later this week or early next week and it appears that Alex will be coming back home to Ames.

-Lawrence Westbrook has signed on to be a Minnesota Gopher in the fall. Minnesota has struggled mightily over the past year and was having a very tough time finding a willing recruit until Westbrook committed over the weekend. Westbrook had been considered a major recruit at one time but as coaches saw him workout and spoke with his family, many dropped their interest in him to the point that Minnesota was his best opportunity to play immediately. ISU beat out Minnesota on all three recruits that they were pursuing simultaneously; Johnson, Stinnett, and Taylor.

-A source close to ISU has mentioned that the coaching staff has started making lists of potential 07-08 & 08-09 recruits. Two recruits already contacted by the staff include Davenport native L.A. Pomlee and Texas native Beas Hamga. Pomlee, 6-7 PF, is currently being pursued by Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Illinois, and Wisconsin, while Hamga, 6-11 C, is being pursued by Iowa State, Baylor, UNLV, and New Mexico. Mac Koshwal, 6-8 C, is also an early front-runner being discussed for next season. Mac has been contacted by Iowa State, Illinois, Wake Forest, Kansas, Marquette, and Memphis.

-Word is that two Iowa Men's Basketball coaches have found themselves without a job. Both Greg Lansing and Rick Walker are rumored to be getting the boot after a tough recruiting stretch for the Hawks. Iowa will enter next season loosing Alex Thompson to ISU, Carlton Reed to Creighton, Lansing, and finally Walker. Iowa is expected to name former Ball State head coach Tim Buckley to the staff as soon as this week. Maybe the worst news for Hawk fans is the info received stating Alford has been given a 5-year extension to his contract.

-No news is good news regarding ISU's current players that are still not 100% committed to returning next season, that according to several sources. Greg McDermott is planning on meeting with all of the current players over the next week and will try to get a commitment from them for next season. No formal cut-off date has been decided on regarding when the players must commit or ask for a release.

-Taggart and Degand are the two with the most uncertainty regarding their future at ISU. Taggart is said to not be completely pleased with his role on the newly organized basketball squad, presumably because of the shifting offense that will take place. Degand is said to be worried most about playing time and whether or not he will be able to start right away. Both are leaning towards returning but have not committed either way.

As a Hawkeye fan, I hope it's true. When he'd enter a game our offense would disappear. Sure he hit a couple of huge 3's, but overall he just looks lost on the court.

Yes, I know he's a project just to make him a project. I'm not a big fan.

 

There is an awful lot of scuttlebutt about this, however.

I haven't seen anything about Alfords contract but than again I am not one that follows the off-season of college sports that in depth.

 

Seems like this guy is a total homer though. However i remember Alford raving about how Thompson plays in practices and he kept hinting that we'd see big things from him this upcoming season.

 

Sucks we lost Carlton Reeve, I guess he's pissed that Freeman got his minutes.

IOWA BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES STAFF CHANGES

 

IOWA CITY, IA - - Iowa Basketball Coach Steve Alford announced today that Brian Jones will become

Director of Basketball Operations and that assistant coach Greg Lansing and Rich Walker, director of

basketball operations, will not have their contracts extended past the end of the fiscal year.

 

“We appreciate the hard work and efforts that Rich and Greg have extended on behalf of this program over

the past seven years,” said Alford.  “With 46 wins in the last two seasons and six straight winning seasons,

they have contributed to a lot of the successes we have enjoyed.  In my long-term commitment towards the

future, I wanted to move Brian to director of operations and felt these moves were necessary for the

continued progress of the program.”

 

Jones joined the Hawkeye staff in 1999 and served for two years as an administrative assistant.  He has

served as an assistant coach for the past five seasons, with his primary focus being opponent scouting and

on-campus recruiting.

 

“Brian is a very detail-oriented person who has done an outstanding job in his scouting reports and tape

breakdowns during the season,” said Alford.  “He will continue to oversee our video and scouting reports

while taking on additional administrative assignments.”

 

Jones is a Rock Island, IL native who also was a member of the basketball staff at Southwest Missouri State

and Nebraska-Omaha before joining the Iowa staff.  He was a four-year letterman at Northern Iowa and

played professionally in Australia and Portugal.

 

Walker has been a member of the Iowa staff for 17 years, serving in his current position the past two years.

 

Lansing is a native of Harlan who has been an Iowa assistant for seven seasons.

 

Alford also announced that sophomore guard Carlton Reed and sophomore forward Alex Thompson have

asked to be released from their scholarships, and their requests have been granted.

 

“Coming off a second Big Ten Tournament championship and back-to-back NCAA Tournament

appearances, we are excited about the direction of the program,” added Alford.  “But, both Alex and

Carlton expressed their desire to explore other options.  We wish them well and will provide assistance as

they search for a better fit.”

 

The Hawkeyes posted a 25-9 overall record in 2006, posting the second most wins in school history.  Iowa

placed second in the Big Ten regular season before winning the conference tournament and earning a third

NCAA Tournament invite under Alford.

What exactly about Freeman makes him an all around player right now? He plays decent defense but was non existant on offense. His shooting was bad and his assist to turnover ratio sucked. That is not an all around player. He may end up good but he isn't right now.

i think that it's important to note that alex thompson and his parents are the same people that got his high school coach fired for 'verbal abuse.' after the coach took the school district to court, he was given his job back.

So apparently both are looking at Iowa State. My money is still on Reed to Creighton, but it's weird picking through the Hawkeye scrapheap.

 

Cheat, Babyjesus or any other Hawk followers - any ideas who the Hawks are looking at for assistant coaches next year? I've felt thats one area they've been lacking in, although it may just be cause of the guy on top....I hear a lot of peopike Neal, but that's really it.

The new assistants should be Billy Garrett from Seton Hall and Tim Buckley from Ball State. Neal has been a great addition to the staff, and the extension is for recruiting purposes (Thank God :banghead ), should be incentive-laden and all that good crap. I wouldn't expect CReed to go to ISU either, MVC is the best fit left for him, and Thompson will be a headcase. I hope McDermott doesn't let him see the floor, despite the parents...
