August 4, 200619 yr Jose Contreras likes him; The White Sox disdain bidding for marquee amateur free agents, but one international player has caught pitcher Jose Contreras' eye. According to the Bogota Times in Colombia, infielder Yuliesky Gourriel has fled Cuba and could ignite a bidding war for his services. Gourriel can play third or second and was regarded as Cuba's best player going into the World Baseball Classic, where he batted .273 with two home runs and six RBIs. "He's not as good as [Omar] Linares, but he's pretty good," Contreras said. "And he's only 22, so he has a bright future." Linares is regarded as one of the best hitters in Cuban history. Contreras said Gourriel has more power than Seattle shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, a former teammate of Gourriel's on the Cuban national team. "If things go right for him, he's going to be a good player," Contreras said.
August 4, 200619 yr International players talking their buddies into coming here worked once for us...
August 9, 200619 yr The Sox will scout but won't get into a bidding war for five players who recently defected from Cuba and are working out in the Dominican Republic. The players are represented by Jaime Torres, the agent for pitcher Jose Contreras. … Possibly some bad blood b/w Torres and the Sox perhaps (if you remember the negotiations for Jose's last deal)?
August 9, 200619 yr QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 06:51 AM) Possibly some bad blood b/w Torres and the Sox perhaps (if you remember the negotiations for Jose's last deal)? jose signed....i think that means that there is not bad blood
August 9, 200619 yr QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 08:32 AM) jose signed....i think that means that there is not bad blood Because Jose signed himself, while the agent wanted to hold out for more money. I don't like the idea of having another feud with an agent, and therefore not getting certain players because of it.
