That could very well be the case. Its interesting considering he last played on August 10th. That said he was making some strides prior to going down. You just wouldn't think a guy that hasn't played in two weeks would get called up, than again with Ozzie sometimes our callups make little to no sense because if he likes a guy he wants him up regardless of how he's doing in AAA.

I didn't think he liked Owens after he ditched Cora down in Venezuela. Or am I confusing him with someone else...?

The SunTimes recently reported his sprained ankle may keep him from being called up when rosters expand. It would be really strange to have him called up a week before that without playing for a while.

If he's getting called up, does this mean Thome is being DL'ed?

God I hope not.

Keep us updated Minorsfan. Weren't you the first to Haeger starting against the Angels?

If my info is correct (I trust my source) I think they are going to bring him up and then DL him for a minor league rehab assignment-- not really sure how all that works but he would be available for the sox in the playoffs if needed I think.

That would mean that the Sox would still have to DL someone else in order to call him up prior to 9/1. My source is going to talk with the Charlotte radio guy soon, and I'll let you know what he finds out.

And that, my friends, illustrates just how little faith they have in Podsednik going forward.

I don't think it has anything to do with Pods. I think it's more that they want a possible pinch runner on the bench for the playoffs (I don't see how he'd make the 25 man roster though).

This is a really weird situation if you ask me. Call up Owens to send him on a minor league assignment. I hope the McCarthy alleged shoulder problem isn't an issue here.

Owens has basically been the AAA Pods this season. Boy I can't wait to see him play.

Could be, fathom. But you'd think Ozuna would be that guy in the playoffs, unless (a) they view Ozuna as their primary right-handed pinch-hitter (could be); or (B) Ozuna's actually starting. In that event, of course, Podsednik would be on the bench.

Anyway, if the Sox make the playoffs, I'm not sure carrying a pinch-runner is a luxury they can afford unless they were to leave a pitcher or Gload off. I guess they could go with 10 pitchers. But I also think they may just want some insurance against their funk-ridden, defensively challenged lead-off man. Not sure Owens is that guy, but who knows?

Yes, Ozuna deserves to be on the playoff roster. He's a great situational hitter, can play numerous positions (not well, but at least he's an option), and is the fastest guy on the team. Sweeney is a much better player than Owens is, and if we're calling up someone to start in LF, it should be Sweeney.

No question about Ozuna being on there. Maybe they see Owens as the Willie Harris addition of this year. But, as we all know, there is only Willie Harris. And he dominates regularly.

From my source who's seen Owens play a lot, he described him as a lesser hitting Willie Harris.

Should be solid.

Minorsfan nailed this one. The Sox called up Owens and put him on the DL. According to my source, they didn't have to send anyone down for him. Owens is now being paid the MLB minimum though, so congrats to him.

So basically Jerry Owens is a rung below God. Not bad.

I'm shocked it took 31 minutes for that post to happen. :P

Remeber when people thought he deserved to be starting? LOL

Id rather DL Cotts give him some time off and also in essence make both of them available for the playoffs so in Sept. whoever outperforms one another we can take and leave the other one home.

Great idea. Cotts is the perfect candidate for that.

You would think they would have to make a roster spot available for him. This works out better.

BTW, I was kidding about the whole July 31 thing. Hence the ' ' dude. Sorry 'bout that. :)
