Rocco Baldelli piques Sox' interest

Featured Replies

This is one guy that I think would be PERFECT on the South Side... if he stays healthy, he'd be a steal, no pun intended. Really, I'd happily have the Sox deal a starter or Anderson and change for Rocco, he produces when healthy, and is still young.

A Sox source said the team also had some interest in the Devil Rays' Rocco Baldelli, who could solve problems in center and at the leadoff spot.

Baldelli, 25, batted .302 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs in 92 games last season, but his career has been slowed by injuries. Major knee and elbow ailments sidelined him for all of 2005.

Baldelli hit .339 in the leadoff spot last season with a .368 on-base percentage. He stole 27 bases in 2004. He is under contract through the 2008 season, with the Devil Rays holding options on him in 2009 and 2010.

admit it, he looks hot in Sox' gear...

Sounds good and wouldn't cost us a king's ransom (see: Carl Crawford).

Tampa's asking price is insane for Rocco. From the sounds of it, they'd want two top prospects like Fields and Broadway.

I would love it. Throw him in center.

I'm sure that could be talked down, and I believe when healthy Rocco is > than Crawford.

He was a great player when he was healthy. He would fill the lead off hole nicely as well as bring a good defensive presence. But everyone has to realize that he isnt this OBP monster that everyone has been clamoring for. You could expect something like .330 OBP for Baldelli.

Rocco isn't close to Crawford. Crawford is better in just about ever aspect.

He had an OBP of .368 last season. :huh

Baldelli would be an interesting guy to settle for. For those in the know, have most of his injuries been of the preventable kind, or the injury prone kind?

I see it as .339 in 2006

.326 in 04 and 03

The .368 was in 183 AB's in the lead off spot. That was the first year he was a lead off hitter, spending most of his time in the middle of the order in 03 and 04

beat cha to it Steve-o

Yeah, he is a little impatient at the plate and swings at some pitches clearly out of the zone.

If we are going to talk to the Rays, I hope we talk about one player only; CC

Ok. I was going by the quote in the first post.

owens and broadway for rocco.

Hitting

Baldelli has been balancing the somewhat conflicting directives of trying to accelerate the development of his power while also learning to be more disciplined at the plate. He tends to be too aggressive at times, and the Rays are preaching a happy medium as he becomes more comfortable with hitting breaking balls. His average figures to increase as he better learns the strike zone. Baldelli also has tremendous speed, which makes bunting and infield hits a key part of his game, though the knee injury could change that.

Baserunning & Defense

Baldelli had been considered one of the fastest righthanded hitters in the majors, though that probably won't be the case, at least initially, as he recovers from the November surgery to repair the ACL tear in his left knee. He is an instinctive and smart player who runs the bases well. His defense improved as he got more comfortable playing inside Tropicana Field, and his athleticism makes him an exciting defender. His arm is above-average.

Heres the lowdown on his injuries

well, not really, i posted it, and then you edited your post rock!

you bastage... now you have to give me Can Corn, just waive him...

I would be ecstatic if Rocco were on the Sox next season...

From Rotoworld...

The Marlins are also after Baldelli, who reportedly was offered to the Phillies for Cole Hamels last month.

McCarthy might be on their list if they are indeed talking to us.

Tru already has his hands on him, you watch.

Ha....Owens would be about 50th on Tampa's outfield depth chart.

Rays would never go for that I don't think. Although I'd do it if they wanted and we could still turn one of our SPs into a replacement prospect for Broadway and other stuff.

I am a HUGE fan on the DevilRays OF players (Crawford, Rocco, Delmon Young) and if we can get one of them it would be vast upgrade in CF or LF.

I would gladly give them Broadway. Although with some of the hype that ESPN has been giving Haeger, im sure we could use him in the deal.

trade deadline came and went though... looks like an offseason move, though I do know that Miramontes was part of that deal between you and tru, and he'll be a FA... so you might want to ask tru to re-sign him for the ridiculous 20 mill he wants.

If we're going to trade McCarthy to Tampa, it better be for Crawford.
