the sox are 8-1 odds to win the world series.

Yankess 7-2

Tigers 5-1

Cubs 8-1

White Sox 8-1

Mets 8-1

Cardinals 8-1

Angels 10-1

Red Sox 10-1

Giants 10-1

nice.. i also love the cubs being 8-1. LOL.

they must be banking a lot on Ted Lily winning 20 games.

Where are those odds from?

There are some definite surprises in there. First and foremost is the Cubs having such great odds and the other Sox being at only 10-1. The Giants 10-1? Hmmm....

Actually its called baiting dumb cub fans to put a lot of money on the cubs to win it all.

its also called playing in an absolute joke of a division...they have as good a shot to win their division as teh sox do teh AL central which is a joke....then the rest of the path to the series isnt nearly as hard in the AL. its the same with the bears....if they arent the favorite to win it all, then the odds are flawed IMO

The Cubs were dead last in the worst division in the Majors last year... that's a lot to put on the shoulders of Alfonso Soriano (and freaking Ted Lilly and the even-worse Jason Marquis)

That's actually pretty much true. Those odds are not just calculated on actual winning - they are calculated on making money. Vegas knows two things for sure about the Cubs... One, some fans will bet on them regardless, so, why make the potential payout higher? Two, as SSI71 says, you are trying to entice fans with those odds, and there are a lot of Cubs fans fawning all over the team's moves right now.

The lineup is pretty loaded for a mediocre NL though.

Soriano - CF (lol)

DeRosa - 2B

Lee - 1B

Ramirez - 3B

Floyd - LF/Barrett - C

Barrett - C/Murton - LF

Jones - RF

Cedeno - SS

P

Maybe it's just me, but that does actually look like a pretty potent lineup.

i was in vegas just after new years and my buddy (a cubs fan) was going to check out the odds for the cubs to win the WS and when he saw 8-1 he was shocked especially after we saw they were 75-1 previously so we had a good laugh about that the entire time there

Beat me to it. They can give the Cubs these crazy odds because their fans will still throw the money down hoping its the year so they dont need to give them the more realistic 20-1

Odds are nothing but a function of how much money is getting put on each team. All this saids is that there are a lot of optimistic Cub fans out there.

Cubs and Red Sox (until they won the WS) are always big bets in Vegas. Every dumb Cub fan wants to have the winning ticket if it ever happens. Means nothing. The Cubs could go 0-162 this year and next year their odds would still be one of the 10 best next year.

Hit the nail on the head righ there. Betting on the CUbs is like betting Notre Dame, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers. It's a phenomenon. Last year the Cubs went off at 6-1 to win the WS. True fact.... Cubs fans pay a good 25% of all electricty costs in Vegas.

lol the Cubs at 8-1 odds, wow. I'm kinda disturbed not to see Minnesota up there. I know they haven't done much in the playoffs but they've made they've won the division 4 of the last 5 years so I think they should at least get a 10-1 odds.

Its the samething as Cub fans, except in Reverse. There are hardly any Twins fans, so no one bets on them, and their odds remain high. It has nothing to do with what the oddmakers thing about teams respective chances.

have to agree that im pretty shocked the cubs have that good of odds. In all fairness i'm kinda impressed the sox are 8 to 1 as well.

Right, Cubs odds are always lower than they should be because the books have to protect themselves in case the Cubs ever win.

Good example of the Notre Dame similarity is this years bowl game against LSU. I think Notre Dame only gave up 7 1/2, where IMO if it was a neutral team the line should have been double digits.

If I was a betting man, I sure wouldn't bet on the Cubs to win it all. They will probably be improved but they won't win it all by any means.

Yeah, but the NL is such a crapshoot again this year, realistically looking at it, the Cubs have a solid shot making the playoffs, then anything can happen. If Prior is healthy, if Dempster is a solid closer and if the line-up raises their OBP, they have as good a shot as anyone in the NL.

Know it's a lot of "ifs", but the NL is weak again this year. If the Mets would have added 1-2 impact SPs, they would have easily been the team to beat, but their SP is still shaky IMO.

Paging Mr. Bartman...Mr. Bartman to the left field stands...

If Prior is healthy, if Dempster is a solid closer and if the line-up raises their OBP, ... then they still have to find somebody who can catch a baseball.

They better hit because that defense is going to kill their pitchers. DLee is very good, everyone else is between below average and terrible.
